  • Trip to Niagara Falls

This past week I have been to "the Falls" on a business trip. First time there, and the view is definitely breathtaking. [8D] This is the view from the hotel window.

However, while in the area I had to take to trip by the old Hamilton plant, where I captured a photo of the "Studebaker" sign still in evidence on the side of the factory building. I was advised by a Hamilton member the sign was painted in 1950.

To add to the enjoyment, while on a tour to Fort Erie, I found this '55 Champion parked in a driveway.

All in all, a good trip!

We love Niagara Falls! We like to have dinner in the revolving room at the top of the Skylon, then go over to Clifton Hill to go through a lame haunted house, or Madame Tussaud's wax museum.

It's amazing how superior the Canadian side is to the American side[|)]

I know the area you stayed; what hotel, was it the Fallsview?

Yes, Embassy Suites, Fallsview - very nice, but being a CASO, I only stayed there as the "company" was paying.

Gee, we don't have anything like that here in Alberta, but we've got plumbers who can fix it.

Don't want that fixed, Gord! It did stop once, years ago (ice dam up river) and people freaked out, thinking it was the end of the world[:0]

Last time we were there was last October... we stopped on the way back from Brad Daugherty's in MI where I picked up Frankenstein. When we left for home I couldn't resist dragging it down Clifton Hill- the heart of the tourist area- and taking a picture in front of the Hard Rock Cafe:

Then I took one while we were waiting on the Rainbow Bridge to cross back into the USA. You can see Horseshoe Falls in the background; the big tower to the far right in the background is the Skylon; not to be missed[8D]:

My plan is to someday recreate those shots with the car finished[^]

I'm lucky to have one of the true wonders of the world a mere 3 1/2 hours from me! I would recommend anyone to put it on their must-see-before-I-die list- the Canadian side, that is... the American side- not so much[|)]

Bob - Thanks for the thought... I mentioned it in a different post a couple of weeks back, that's how I got the directions to find the old Studebaker factory in Hamilton, but as I spent most of the trip in meetings, not a lot of time to sight see other than what the organizers had arranged.

However, being a "truck" guy, if I'd known you were that close, maybe I'd have played hooky! [:0]

My 55 was born and restorted in Hamilton-then lived 13 years of its life in Lockport, New York, where i got it--right down the road from the Falls

For being deep in the snow belt-- Lockport and the surrounding area has an amazing amount of very nice old--any kind of car-sitting around in driveways

One of the bigger myths going is that there will never be really nice, rust-free old cars in the Northeast. This may be true for most cars when they were more current; but there are plenty of super-clean, rust-free old cars to be found here.

The theory can apply to most cars that were sold new and used year-round here; but it fails to take into account 2 types of cars:

                        1. Native but pampered, garage-kept, never driven in winter cars
                        2. Cars transplanted from dry areas and garaged winters

There are more than some might realize!

                        I have 4 62 Daytonas:

                        1. Body from CO, very solid
                        2. Skytop from MI, extremely rusted
                        3. 4 spd. donor from TX, extremely rusted
                        4. V8 auto from CT, very solid

I also have several others from other areas that defy common thinking on this where rust is concerned.

I used to think that the only way to get a rust-free, or nearly so, car was to buy one in the South or West; while the percentage is greater, it's certainly not the only answer

Alberta does too! I particularly like the one the plumbers built off the High Level Bridge in Edmonton.
