There's a risk to driving a Studebaker...

    12 years ago I got the hell out of California and these posts only reinforce why. As we head into November and election season and we all prepare to go into the voting booth, among the issues and personalities involved ask yourself, "would this candidate safeguard my Studebaker (or other possessions)?" If the answer is no, vote the monsters out. We have a lot of politicians who are dead set to change this country in ways unimaginable only a few short years ago. It's up to us to say and vote "HELL NO."

    Sorry for the rant but a country where politicians can steal cars is no longer a country most of us would want to live in. Let's take it back. To borrow a phrase from NRA: "You'll only get my Studebaker when you pry the steering wheel out of my dead cold hands."

        So, in CA you could find a Studebaker somewhere where its not "supposed to be", check on it to see if it has current tabs, and if not, just haul it away and take it home? That what it sounds like. And if so, if the "owner" tried to sue you for it back, could you use the California laws to back up your claim to it? Talk about redistribution of property. Karl Marx has taught the California legislature well.

            About the environmental aspect, has anyone ever tried to put a catalytic converter on a Studebaker? Do Chevy swaps usually include putting in the emission stuff? I've never heard of it being done, but I suppose it could be done. Now, how does the state know what's under the hood? If they categorize ALL Studebakers as gross polluters, how does that affect what modifiers do? If you put a 2006 Corvette motor and emmission system in your "gross polluter" is it still a gross polluter? Well, I have heard the law is blind...

                Here in the People's Republic, a senate candidate is saying she's a friend of the working man and is ticked about high gas prices. She constantly assails "big oil". Good for her...but what her ads don't say is she was a leader in the "No drilling movement" in the new Alaska oil field. Then she demanded an answer from the oil industry why prices in the state were so high and was told refineries in the Rocky Mountain area are having trouble adapting to new pollution standards.
                Well then, how about giving the working man a break?
                No, she'd rather stand with the enviro guys than her beloved "working man".

                    If you can keep this thread related to Studebakers and the old car hobby I'll let it go on. However, if you insist on shifting it elsewhere, I will delete it. Fair enough?

                        I live outside the city, which has one of those inoperable vehicle impoundment laws. Still, It seems like the most restrictive laws happen to be in upscale, densely populated suburban residential areas. But, there are areas that are less particular, and enforcement is selective. So, if you decide that your lifestyle must include having a few inoperable or project vehicles on it, be prepared to take up residence in some area where you will have to make some concessions to nuisances of other kinds that your neighbors may have. Also, you might have an area of mixed uses--an older residential area on large lots, with industrial plants or stuff like that nearby. I happen to live in a nice, peaceful area on dead-end street with good neighbors. But, we are adjacent to an interstate, close to an airport, a race track, a fire station, a railroad yard, and various other commercial businesses. You hear guns going off on a regular basis, as people practice for hunting season(no, we're not in the 'hood). And, there is a couple of new subdivisions full of large houses going in nearby, and an auto enthusiast(unless they are a late-model "wax nut")would be crazy to move in there. Doubtless, they have numerous deed restrictions on what you can do, and an HOA. Hopefully, the homeowners there won't start complaining about seeing too many "eyesores" on the way to their new dream home and demanding strictly enforced ordinances for everyone else to follow. But, I suppose it will get that away one of these days. [:0]

                            Well .. I hope this thread doesnt get deleted, its a chance to dispell
                            some rumors about California laws, and their effect on other States.

                            The 48 hour rule is turned in by a neighbor, the City doesnt have the
                            resources to have Police trolling for vehicles. The departments public
                            relations person explained that rarely (unless its too obvious) does a
                            Police officer initiate an abandoned vehicle notice. You can thank
                            your neighbors (as I did) for that. The notice that I got, was left
                            ON the Avanti, and the tires were marked. TOO clearly I must add!!

                            Those that think that they are "safe" outside of evil California will
                            have a rude awakening when their State adopts "what works" elsewhere.
                            We have had this conversation over and over on the Impala Forum when
                            guys are removing catalytic converters to get an imaginary 25 hp they
                            read about on some other forum. The truth of the matter is that the
                            CAT's today "waste" about 2 hp each. Not much to worry about, and not
                            enough to risk the FEDERAL (yes Federal ALL States) fine for removing.
                            A recent test done on a NEW Corvette found that removing the CATs was
                            actually worth LESS HP on the dyno. Yah .. they are tuned for them!
                            California smog laws are coming to a State near you! Be prepared.

                            Not all old cars are considered to be "gross polluters", a properly
                            tuned Studebaker can pass most smog tests for older vehicles without
                            any trouble. California Smog Laws dont even apply to any Studebakers,
                            since they are older then the 1975 cutoff. They are EXEMPT. Avanti
                            II's will fall under smog laws, and I can use that as an example to
                            keep this "Studebaker related". This is the current law :

                            "Beginning April 1, 2005, the 30-year rolling exemption has been repealed. Instead, vehicles 1975 model-year and older will be exempt. Therefore, 1976 model-year and newer vehicles will continue to be subject to biennial inspection indefinitely."

                            This means that a 1976 Avanti II needs to pass smog tests that are
                            defined for a vehicle of its year. It has higher allowable emissions
                            then a car, say 1996. Unfortunately, if you decide to upgrade the
                            engine in the Avanti II, to something NEWER then 1976, then the car
                            must pass emissions standards for the year of the engine. If you were
                            to install a 1996 LT1 Corvette motor, then the car MUST pass tests as
                            the car you removed the engine from - a 1996 Corvette. This isnt as
                            hard as it sounds, just means that the air pump must be there (they
                            are plastic electric pumps these days that only run when cold) and it
                            should have a CAT in the exhaust the same distance from the manifold
                            as the Corvette.

                            I dont think that realistically someone can just come and take a car
                            from your property without notice and claim its theirs. Thats stealing
                            regardless of it being registered. Currently there is litigation on
                            tow companies in LA that are towing legally parked cars, and holding
                            them for ransom. Someone will always break rules, so its in YOUR best
                            interest to REGISTER your Studebakers, and not leave them for days and
                            days on the street unattended and unchecked.
