  • Do I need a psychiatric eval? * *10/12 update* *

Something tells me I MUST be crazy. I've just returned home tonight from work by way of a nice local gentleman who sold me his '58 Packard! [:0] He's had the car since 1974 when his Father (the original owner) passed away. It's nice for it's age, but will need at least as much work as the other five I already have! So I ask you--- Is this sane behavior? I'm begining to wonder about myself...

You can view the car here~

Look in the 'My Rides' album.

Yes, she's very solid AND she runs~ trouble is I think that the brakes are stuck! I tried to move her last week. I fought to release the parking brake handle and then couldn't get her to go. When put in gear she feels like she's got something in front of a wheel, but there's nothing there. Definately wants out of that backyard, though!
I hope the weather co-operates with me this weekend...

Sounds like sane behavior to me. Although, when you're a lifelong Studebaker fan "sane behavior" takes on a whole new meaning.

check that the parking brake is really returning, on several cars lately I have seen the spring that returns the lever under the driver's seat either weak or missing, without that spring the friction of the cables can keep the e-brake applied, the fix is to have a helper keep gentle pressure on the e-brake handle while banging the linkage forward with a handle. And, of course, not to use the e-brake again until you've lubed everything up and replaced the spring. It appears to hook to the driveshaft support crossmember on pre-58 cars and to the floorpan on later cars.

                        good luck,

Luck guy! That is a nice solid '58. Those disappeared up here in the rusty northeast years ago.
Just curious, what is the 58L-####?
                            Regards
