  • New carpet in 51 Commander - need suggestions

Starting the last step and installing the new carpet kit. Everything is going in well and I think I have the rear under control. The one thing I am unsure of is the brake and trans holes. I think I will leave the brake hole uncut and just make it to where I can pull the carpet back. I rebuilt the brakes and there does not seem to be a leak. The transmission hole is another story. My transmission leaks so I will need access to it. My thought was to cut out the hole from the carpet. If you look I need to cut the corners out of the back and that is enough carpet to glue onto the top of the cover plate. It will be larger than the hole and will cover. I have black or gray edging material I can sew onto the outer edge. I would just not glue where the screw heads are so I have access to them. The cover has a thick rubber seal I made so it does not leak air. Am I missing something?

Doesn't the DG Transmission Fill and Check on the RIGHT Side? I think the Round cover on top of the tunnel is for Band Adjustment.

That is how my '54 DG is.

I don't see the rectangular Cover for that on the right, is it under that carpet?

On a side note I finished the back interior and trunk.

No, that round cover is where the dip stick is pulled out and you fill there. The bands are adjusted from underneath. I know this because of doing it so many times ):

Maybe it's not on the right on a '54, It HAS been since 1979 since I drove the Land Cruiser!

I am much more used to checking my '57 to '60 Flight-O-Matics on the right.

Didn't these cars originally have a rubber cover over the access hole?

The fluid level is checked through the top on the DG transmission.
Yes the DG use a rubber cover, but was two tiered so that the bottom part filled the hole while the top extended over the carpet/mat to make a complete seal. Rubber seal, glue? I have had plenty of these and never had a leak, but I have never tried to use a cover that was in poor condition either. I guess that there's the first time for anything, but I kind of think that, in sixty years, I would have already experienced a leak by now, if it was going to happen.

The carpet I purchased on eBay from JC Whitney. It’s through Newark auto. So far it’s fitting very well. I have to notch the rear piece for those large armrest on the commander but other than that it fits perfect. The wind lace was custom-made by the guy who did my headliner. He used the vinyl from the door panels and the seats to make that custom.
