Here's a picture of another Wagonaire with camper. I'm in York tonight and don't have my notes about who sent this to me, but it's an original. My '65 Wagonaire sways enough as it is. I can't imagine how bad it would be with all that weight way up high!

Stu Chapman. former SDC pres and Studebaker of Canada Advertizing Manager remembers this unit - and I remember him making what sounded like a derogatory comment about it.

Paul - our family's vacation in the summer of '66 consisted of pulling a 15 foot Shasta travel trailer all over Northern Ontario with a '62 GT Hawk. Dad put an equalizer hitch on the car and pointed her North - thru some pretty hilly territory as you know - all the way to Sioux Lookout north of Thunder Bay. Air-cooled Flight-o-matic, no trailer brakes.

THE CAR GOT 17 MPG DOING THIS FOR US !!!! That's Imperial mpg, mind you. The car had NO mechanical issues and that same tranny is in her today, untouched a far as I know. Try THAT with your Caravan!

I'm glad our family had that vacation - it give me the valuable knowledge of how to back up a car with a trailer attached.

Yes Anne (I’ve seen, been in and travelled extensively in one: the gentlemen standing beside our Daytona Wagonaire with camper in the colour photo is my father. The pic of detached camper was taken in the family driveway. These two pics are from my family photo album.

                  Very cool!

Did your family actually do any vacation time with it? Or just for a photo-shoot, only?

I remember seeing this in a Popular Mechanics or Popular Science magazine in 1965. As I remember it was a half page article. I don't remeber if it was a promotion item for Studebaker or for the camper. Neat to look at but driving it would test my nerves now.

As far as towing, I do remember older members showing pictures of a very heavy trailer being towed by a 1950 Commander. Not sure they would pass muster today.

I have to wonder if your Family sold it to Bob Moss the Manager & part Owner of Frost and French Studebaker and his Wife in the Los Angeles Area, or maybe the person you sold it to flipped it again? I do know that Bob sold it also, and possibly THAT person had it advertised with a photo sitting in a covered Carport attached to a House.

So apparently, currently it is LOST, and may be out there somewhere.

Almost 13 year old thread brought back to life. It’s a trip down memory lane to see some that don’t post here anymore: that weird kid with the rusty r2 Lark, my late friend Leonard Sheppard, Gary Ash, Dick Clemens, and of course Anne herself. I wonder how they all are?

Hello Craig: to answer your question - yes and no. Yes we (My family) travelled extensively in the camper. Dad bought it “new” as a demo from the Studebaker dealer in London Ontario Canada. At the time Dad had a blue 64 Champion 4dr as a company car and saw it at the dealer during a warranty check. As I recollect the dealer was accepting “bids”. Dad ended up as high bidder and we ended up with the rig. During the early years of ownership; mom, dad, my two much younger brothers and the family cat travelled extensively, mostly used to camp in provincial parks within Ontario. The pic of dad standing beside the camper was taken in the spring of 1966 at Rondeau Provincial Park on Lake Erie. It’s interesting that while the rig came with a printed promo sheet (the one seen elsewhere with a smiling woman waving out the back door) the only instructions we had to separate the camper from the car was that it was easily done with the car jack. The car jack was a bumper jack and sadly the camper didn’t have any bumpers! So the camper stayed attached to the car until 1968 when dad had a set of Jack legs custom made (as seen in the carport pic). The carport pic was a pic I took around 1970/71 just for posterity.. to prove it could be done! One interesting trip we took in the camper was Easter 1968. Dad took a few extra days off to make it a week. We left London Ontario and our first stop on our way to Jekyll Island was an overnight stop at old family friends in Warren MI. We headed south and crossed into Detroit. Dad took a wrong turn and got turned around (lost) so he exited the freeway in search of a payphone to call our friends for directions. We ended up right smack in the middle of the infamous Detroit riots which followed the assassination of MLK. No place for a white Canadian family in a camper!! Needless to say we made it to Warren and eventually to Jekyll Island. But not before blowing not one but two rear “Laredo” tires. The first (Right rear) went in the mountains of WV. It wasn’t easy getting the spare off the roof and the whole rig threatened to topple off the jack and down the side of the mountain. But we got it done, camped several days in Jekyll (smelled like rotten eggs) and eventually made it home. If anyone has questions about the camper or trips we took (it came with a set of yellow on black California plates under the seat) just ask me and I’ll try to answer. Cheers! Blake

Thank you for your personal recollections. There are always good family reminisces with Studebakers that make excellent reading for all, especially this one with its very unique set up.

It would be worth submitting your recollections of vacationing with it to Turning Wheels along with some family photos including it taken at the time.

                                No.
Mom & Dad sold the camper around 1971 to a guy who lived somewhere near Kemptville Ontario (south of Ottawa). I’ve looked but have never seen it again. The car was T boned in Ottawa in the summer of 1972. The INA insurance company wrote off the car which was sold to Arnprior Ottawa (A&O) Auto Parts in Arnprior Ontario for dismantling and salvage.
