  • Three Neglected Hawks, Check In, And Update

I have woefully neglected our three Hawks for the last year, and have been scarce around here on the forum. So thought I'd check back in, provide an update, and perhaps become inspired to get back behind the wheel of the Studes.

It all started with retirement last year on June 7th. Two days later, to avoid becoming a couch potato, I bought a 2008 Honda GoldWing. That worked well, maybe too well, as I sort of got hooked. The GL1800's speed, power, and ability to zip through the twisties is both phenomenal and addicting. Long story short, exactly one year later, I had ridden in 22 states and a little over 50,000 miles! Previously, I'd ridden MCs over 50 years, but probably never topped 20,000 in a single year. I joined a GoldWing forum, began to fellowship, and attend ride-in meets. Somewhere along the way, I set a goal of 50,000 miles in a year. Doing the math, that's an average of about 1000 miles per week, or 4000 miles per month. Summer was easy, but winter brought challenges, though somehow I stuck to it. The last few months, I basically became what I'd call a, "mileage slave" in order to stay on schedule. I must say, as a group, GoldWingers are some riding mofos, but even they are astounded at 50,000 in a year. So now the goal has been met, retirement transition has been accomplished, and it's time to get back to normal life.

During the last year I drove the 63GT maybe 500 miles, but the 62GT and 56J less than 100 miles each, and probably only started them up every 3-4 months. Today, I started the 62GT and the 56J, and even washed the 56J. I plan to go for a drive later today in the 56J, and hopefully iron out some of the flat spots on the tires. Next, will do the same with the 62GT. Using this approach, I will transition back behind the wheel. I still plan to ride the GW, but nothing like the past year.

I have lurked on here once in awhile, but not much to offer, so did not even bother to log in. It's good to be back, and I look forward to getting back in the loop here.

    Thanks Folks!

Glad to hear that you are enjoying retirement. After 50,00 miles, you must have some major callouses on your back side! Happy that you have the Hawks out, and cleaned up.

Looks like you are just about ready to move up to the whole bird from just the wing (despite it being Gold)! Congratulations!

Glad your back Joe. Bikes are fun. Had a 1200 wing and a 1500 classic kawasaki . crashed the 1500 in 2009 and totaled it and kind of took the fun out of it. Those rocks from road rash hurt a lot more coming out than going in. Still got the 1200 but haven't ridden it in a few years.

Good to see you are back Joe. Let me know if you are planning a trip to southern California anytime in the near future. If so, maybe you would have time to drop on on one of our Los Angeles chapter meetings.

              Thanks for the welcomes.

I took the 56J out for about 50 miles of rural Kentucky roads today, and she ran like a top. Did not notice any flat spots on the tires, but only higher speeds on the Interstate tell for sure.

Howard, not sure when I will be back in LA, but would love to catch up with y'all, and attend a Chapter meeting. My son and family are enjoying life in North SD county, so hopefully I will get back out there someday, just not sure when. Thanks for the invite.

I'm sure glad you are back. I have enjoyed reading your posts for years. You help with the EFI topic was great and the story of your trip with the boys was something I would have loved to have a chance to do.
Glad to have a chance for more from you!
