  • What would you pay for good regrindable cores

I have many good regrindable V8 cams.
    What are these worth?

  • #2
I would think that there is very little demand and therefore little value. Most already will have their current cam to use as a core for regrinding. I guess that some may want to have a replacement on hand and not tie their car up waiting for a regrind. I never remember replacing a broken V8 cam.

Dave Thiebolt, (maybe spelled wrong), sells the regrinds with or without a core. He may be interested in good cores to replace stock. When I purchased mine, I hung on to the original, with the lifters in order, in case I wanted one later.

        Sort them into:
        1. Early steel cam
        2. Standard Stude V8 cams
        3. R1/R2 cams
        4. R3/R4 cams don't really exist, but it's worth checking the casting numbers.

When sorted, one will discover the shipping for one cam costs more than the core is worth. Putting several in a box or small pallet will cut net shipping costs substantially.

If you can deliver them to Mansfield Dave would probably buy some.

Phil Harris at Fairborn Studebaker on occasion is looking for cam cores also. You might give him a call at 937-878-1576 and see if he'd be interested. If you could sort them out like Jack suggested, it would probably help both of you. Bill

For reference, to send a single cam from Minnesota to Washington in the mail is around $18 and FedEx is about $17.

The USPS has the package below that looks like it would fit several cams for the large flat rate of $17.60.

Since I ship parts regularly, I know from personal experience USPS Flat Rate Boxes are fatally flimsy. If one is going to ship cams or other hard parts in them, be prepared to build another box inside using double-walled corregated cardboard and lots of strong tape.

Question for those who know: when a cam is reground, are the cam lobes re-hardened?

                  Thanks for your replies.

No. Cast iron cams are a special grade of iron alloy called "Proferal." They're harder than the hubs of hell. When we cut off the distributor gear and rear journal to use on a steel billet roller, it's necessary to use a friction chop saw. A typical steel cutting bandsaw won't scratch the Proferal.

Usually, the cast iron cams are Parkerized after regrinding to better hold the break-in lubricant, but they're not re-hardened.

                      Sort of related...
I bought a dozen of these cam boxes from Rousch/Fenway (or whatever their used parts biz is called).
Spent $4 each for them, and you can put your lifters on them.
The hinge is just plastic and will not last more than eleventeen openings, but the lid snaps on.
Good for storage and shipping (inside a shipping box)

It looks like it might create some fairly low compression readings. LOL The other goodies around are downright handsome.
