Hemmings Daily: 1967 "500" STP Turbine Car
Here's a real nice item from Hemmings Daily on the STP Turbine Car from the 1967 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. This is very much Studebaker-related because STP [Chemical Compounds] was still a Division of Studebaker Corporation at the time. There's a good period video of the year's events imbedded in this link:

Bob I read that and watched the video. I was 15 that Memorial day and completely entranced with the turbine car. Unfortunately, we had no media coverage of the 500 that day or the next day. I didn't find out until that night it had been delayed. I saw more coverage in that video than I ever did at the time. Truly an epic 500

'Glad you enjoyed it, Tim; it was such a terrible disappointment for Andy, but he proved his point as to its potential.
For a car to be so unique and so well engineered that it did so well on its first outing was a tremendous accomplishment.

Bob, thanks for putting this on the forum. That Indy car was an incredible piece of technology. The ruling against turbine power sounds like what NASCAR has done that also limits progress.Joe Roberts

Thanks for posting, Bob.
Andy was a true visionary and showman at his best. No one previously dreamed of balancing the driver and motor side by side. And did I hear correctly it was four wheel drive? Now that was true innovation. It is such a shame that the turbine was banned in such an unfair manner as shown by the commentary.

After watching the vids and hearing the tech inspector's grand compliments to Andy G on the design and construcion quality of the 67 car it makes one wonder why the switch to to Lotus 56 racecar for the 68 500. As a kid at the time, I always thought the 67 car was cool with a very purposeful design element to its looks, but thought the Lotus 'wedge' was one of the coolest kick-ass looking Indy cars of all time. Apparently so did Mattel as that was the car they reproduced as a Hotwheels...and one that I never threw away as a kid... I still have it in my collection of junk. Regardless, the links were awesome, thanks for posting. Cheers, Juniorsigpic

Yes, Bill; the turbine car was 4-wheel drive.
