  • New Item For My Collection - not really Stude related

As all of you can probably tell, I am a huge history geek. This interest of mine includes military paraphernalia. Just recently, I had the good fortune to get this lovely piece, an Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) tropical field cap! I can carry out the Emperor's will very honorably now! TENNO HEIKA BANZAI!

*This was the only way for me to post this picture. Sorry.*

Jake Robinson Kaywell: Shoo-wops and doo-wops galore to the background of some fine Studes. I'm eager and ready to go!

1962 GT Hawk - "Daisy-Mae" - she came dressed to kill in etherial green with a charming turquoise inside. I'm hopelessly in love!

The Emperors will? You might want to read some WWII history, particularly about the way they treated prisoners.

Or at the very least, watch the movies "Railway Man" and "Unbroken." The movies really tone down the torture, though.

Basically, what I said is very much tongue-in-cheek. I know that the IJA was far from being noble or just.

Jake, Memorial Day weekend may not have been the best time for the picture.

          Just saying.

This is the story of the heavy cruiser USS Houston (CA:30) a member of the Asiatic Fleet, what happened to her and her survivors...at the hands of the Japanese.

There is a reason why most of us of the 60 plus generation do not buy Japanese products especially cars. It is because of the way the Japanese treated and fiercely fought against our Grandfathers and Fathers. It is hard now to buy a TV not made in Japan because of the forgotten history and profit motive. If Vietnam ever started to build cars, give me a pass. Having to sleep under my bed from 8pm to 4am while the base was being shelled by the North Vietnamese is something I won't forget.

Oh... Well then... Looks like I didn't think this all the way through.

Every TV I've seen on the store shelves in the past 10 years or more, regardless of the brand name, are 'Made in China'.

7 December 1991, I attended the 50th anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor at the USS Arizona Memorial.

Walking thru the parking lot after the ceremonies concluded, I spotted a Toyota Camry with Pearl Harbor Survivor license plates.

Besides Japanese, how many members of this forum drive German and Italian cars?

I have dozens of books on the Pearl Harbor Attack, 100's of books on WWII history, but I've owned 3 Nissan Titan pickups, all assembled in MS

Today, unless you can decode the first digit of the VIN, you won't know in what country your "US" vehicle was assembled.

Well, I guess my Magnavox is at least that old, not flat screen and heavy as all get out. I think it is older than that. It still performs and I guess when it final gives up, I will have to search for a American Manufacture. It will probably cost more but it will support an American Company and workers.

My "newer cars" are a 1997 Oldsmobile 88 and a 2012 Dodge Caravan (wife's vehicle to truck the grand kids around). One thing that burns me up is to see a state vehicle with a state license plate with an import car or truck. A section of I-10 is named the Pearl Harbor Highway between Tucson and Phoenix.

We all have the freedom to choose what we can buy because of the efforts of many like Sgt Alvin York, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, Jimmy Doolittle, Audie Murphy, Paul Tibbetts and many others that went and did there job quietly because that is the way things used to be. I choose to as much as possible to buy from American for several reasons. Not wanting to go political just my way of doing business.

Jake, the Japanese military had little to no respect for those foreigners whose countries they invaded during the Pacific war. I believe they were indoctrinated to never surrender and held foreign forces such as American, Australian, British etc etc in contempt for having done so.

The Japanese were particularly cruel and contemptuous, best to keep these items as souvenirs, I respectfully suggest you wouldn't want to follow whatever orders came from Tokyo during the war.

Many thanks to our American allies for their assistance in saving Australia from being overrun by the Japanese who were very close in Timor and New Guinea.

Guys... I think Jake is excited about finding a new historical artifact and wanted to share. Do you REALLY think his intentions are misplaced?

Jake, I’ve said it before.. This is a tough crowd made up of people with strong opinions. Don’t let anyone dwindle your enthusiasm.

If its newer than 1978, it would be a Dutch product. Philips NV of Eindhoven bought them out.

                              Jake,

Cool find. I have no problem with the Japanese. My daily driver is a Honda. I just got back from a trip to Japan last month. It was wonderful. Everyone was very friendly and very pro-American. I went out last night to hear a Japanese band play (The 5, 6, 7, 8's). My father was a WW2 vet who served in the Philippines. After the war he got a masters in chemistry and was a salesman with a major chemical company. He had many clients from the far east including Japan who were invited over to our house for dinner. While no one should forget the terrible things done during WWII, we should also acknowledge that Japanese has changed and they have become one of our strongest allies.
