  • Somebody will be kind and explain me some sections from my Production Order...

Hello, i Just receive the production order from my 57 Golden Hawk from the Studebaker Museum.... and i have some sections that i like to know what it means..... First of all my car was saled in Mexico; The Production Order said that was Shipped via MKD (i do not know what it means, perhaps somebody will be kind and tell me), also with the equipment description some of them are obvious; like Flight O Matic or the Power Steering... but there“s some others not so easy to understand, like :
"700 Head", HD Shocks, Carb Meter Rod Kit, Furnish Wheels & Speedo Gears for 710x15 6 Ply Tires ( i understand that the Speedometer was calibrate for that size of tires, but what means Furnish Wheels..., it saids also that was equiped with tinted glass, AC 2756 Clock, AC 2688 Antenna (Is it twin antennas on the trunk area?), and AC 2750 Liter (also, i don't know what this means...)... it also mention that "Omit Tires", and "Omit Battery" (this both omissions was, perhaps because it is an export unit...)..., and also if there's no mention to radio, that means that there was no radio onboard?...
If somebody can be kind & explain this terminology, I will appreciate any information about it ...

    Thanks

Studebaker had an assembly plant near Mexico City. https://forum.studebakerdriversclub....lant-In-Mexico Some photos in Post #12 here: http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...ntario-factory

Going by your Production Order, it appears your car was assembled at that plant. I believe the '700 Head' refers to low-compression heads, and the 'Omit Tires and 'Omit Battery' would mean they were locally sourced to bring down the import duties on the car.

This Car was built for Rough and unpaved Roads and low Octane Gas, which is why the 6 Ply. Truck Tires were going to be supplied in Mexico with the proper Wheels and Speedometer Gear to match and the H.D. Shocks Crated at South Bend, IN USA for the same reason.

The 7.0 to One Ratio Cylinder Heads are for the local Fuel.

Thanks Craig, your theory of 700 heads will be true, because it is also mentioned in another row; The Carb Meter bar kit ... will have a relationship between both teams ... but I wonder, as far as I know, the Golden Hawks were built only in South Bend ... but maybe I'm wrong ... Thanks for the links, they are really interesting for me...
          Thanks for your answer

That would be for continuous use in high-altitudes, as Mexico City is some 7,300 feet above sea level.

The 1956 Golden Hawk and President Classics were supplied with 15X6" wheels.
These were a little wider to accommodate the larger tires used on these cars.
I suspect that the notation "supply wheels" on the 1957 Golden Hawk was to supply the wider wheels used on the previous year cars.
The MKD probably meant Medium Knock Down.
The car was probably crated in South Bend less wheels and battery but otherwise completely assembled.
The wider wheels were packed in the same crate.

That's also true, Mexico City is at 2,400 meters above sea level (7,800 feet above sea level) ... cars lose enough power at this height due to lack of oxygen ... and they have given cases, such as the Ford Taurus that had to be withdrawn from sale due to problems in the gearbox related to the lack of atmospheric pressure ... this height is something that should be taken into account ...

                Thanks

I had already thought about what MKD meant, and I agree that it means that it was manufactured in South Bend with the exception of some parts (For example, the Speedometer had to be placed in Mexico and it is in Kilometers, as the Golden Hawk has been graduated at 160 MPH, This has its equivalent in Kilometers which is 240 Km / h ...)

Are you able to show us some photos of your car? I would be interesting in seeing it.

Are you sure it is not MKT? That would be the Missouri Kansas Texas Lines Railroad..

                      Maybe a typo..

But Shipped Via is how it was routed on the rail system to the destination.

This was Trucked to NJII (New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois) then to WAB (Wabash Railroad ) and finally to SP (Southern Pacific) to Phoenix AZ.
