All has to do with the time of day. Sun roof when the sun is out, moon roof when the moon is in the sky. Bucket roof when it's raining, BTW.sigpic1966 Daytona (The First One)

Interesting: The "sunroof", as the box was labled, I put in my then new Datsun in 1979, was a smoked glass window that popped up with latches much like the 1/4 windows in a Coupe, or it could be removed but it wasn't particularly easy (and NEVER happened) is what these articles are now calling a moon roof. Oddly I had never heard the term "moonroof" until several years later. However, they reference the roll back roof of the Renault 2CV as a sunroof, and the sliding canvas roofs of my two '63 VW sedans have always been refered to as "Sunroof" by VW. I'd say they are all "sunroofs", with the sliding, roll back, or removeable roof given the option of being called a "moonroof" if so desired. If you've ever tried to look through one of those smoked glass roofs in the dark it's pretty hard to see the moon through, given the reflective nature of dark glass and that there are only a few days a month the moon is particularly bright enough to show through.Originally posted by Dick Steinkamp View PostComment

Originally, a sunroof was a solid covered metal or cloth. Moon roofs are glass (so when closed you can see the moon n stars at night) and we're most often electrically operated. Now they are all just called sunroofs because there is no need to define the difference. Solid non glass sunroofs are pretty much a thing of the past. Havent seen one on a new car since the late 70s Wich is when "moon roofs" came into being.sigpic1957 Golden HawkComment
