  • Save from crusher

I hate to say it but I've got to get rid of these cars. I have a 59 2dr station wagon. No engine, trans, rear axle or hood. Glass is all good and most of the chrome moulding is good. There is little rust on the car and only dent is on the tailgate. Basically a solid shell with good glass. I also have a 62 4dr wagon. No engine, auto trans. This one is a little more rough but could be restored. Glass is also good. I am located in N. California. If they don't sell, they'll go to the crusher. Make offers.

Ya know, Jake. We see this "buy them or they get squished" approach to selling alot. It's leverage that rarely works. It's hard to demand a "ransom" for something of limited value. I happen to know that at least one of these cars didn't sell on ebay. I don't know where you started the bidding at but the fact that they didn't sell there is telling. And you've got a considerably smaller audience on this forum.
If you're REALLY interested in seeing the cars saved, then saying that they're up for grabs for free would be the best approach to finding a new home for them. Of course - your cars - your deal. I don't know what scrap steel is bringing at the moment.

Dead cars are tough to move. And at today's gas prices, someone's gotta really want it or live reasonably close to be motivated. On the other hand - maybe you could get some money out of them if you offered to say, sell the entire trim package off them or the glass or whatever. Of course, this approach would require the effort of removing and packing the stuff.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass here - just offering a reality check. Heck, I hope someone proves me wrong and flashes some cash for these! Then there'd be TWO happy people and two saved Studes.

Jake, what you have are parts cars - so why not strip off the remaining good pieces before sending the carcass to the smelter? I think that you will find people who need or want some of the glass or trim or even some of the sheetmetal.

Other than very local buyers shipping a non running car shell is prohibitively expensive. When a car like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1959-...ION-WAGON-RARE ONE_W0QQitemZ270036137335QQihZ017QQcategoryZ6466QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem gets $4,500 what is an incomplete shell really worth?

Good luck, I think if you want to get rid of those cars without your time and labor is dismantling all the bits then a "free" price will allow someone to overlook the transportation expense. Hiring a professional company to transport a non-running shell of a car is more expensive than you might guess.

Thanks for the input guys, I think I will strip the cars and sell the stuff thats worth it.

The reality of it Mr Biggs. Someone turned me in for having too much junk around my place. This is not the first time this has happend in my county either. So they really will go to the crusher if they can't get a home. I do think I will take a different approach at this though.

Don't feel like a lonley one Jake I had to pay $395 for a collectors permit, then $40 per car per year for every car I have that is non opp. and have to keep them where they can't be seen from the street.

Man, that's awful to hear about counties doing that. I think there should be a federal law that prohibits localities from doing this to classic parts cars in nice dry states like California.

I'm really not one who wants to see our national government telling the states what to do, but it's just a shame in cases like this.
