  • Studebaker Rock Video

Amazing what you can find on the internet when the forum is down. May be old hat to some of you, but I couldn't afford cable and MTV back in 1988 when this came out, so I missed it back then. From a fellow Hoosier named Henry Lee Summer. Figures a Hoosier would feature a Studebaker:

Rock and Roll Singer Under Arrest

                Kara Brooks,

                September 16, 2006

Residents of Country Wood Estates Mobile Home Park had quite a bit of excitement when a man driving a silver Ford Explorer drove recklessly through their neighborhood.

"As soon as he pulled in he was sideways in here. Then he turned around and took off, hitting all the cars."

Witnesses say the man struck six vehicles. But the excitement didn't end there. The driver ran into this mobile home where neighbors trapped him so he wouldn't leave before sheriff deputies arrived. At that point, Amanada Johnson realized the man standing on her porch was in serious trouble, who also happens to be Henry Lee Summer.

"He's a singer that used to be platinum three years in a row. How do you know him? He's my cousin. That's probably why he was coming here. He was probably coming to lay down or something like that. "

Henry Lee Summer of Brazil, Indiana is a rock and roll singer who released most of his albums during the eighties. His first single was "Sweet Love." But now you can say he's hit a bad note, facing several charges including DUI, failure to stop at a property damage, and resisting arrest.

Major Larry Jahnke, Marion Co. Sheriff Dept. "He did fight actively with the officer and he was tazed during the incident."

Officers are now waiting on blood work to determine Summer's alcohol level. They will also find out if he had been using drugs.

My next Studebaker is in the future, but now getting my hair messed up in a Sebring ragtop!
Almost as fun as a Studebaker!

I'd heard about his run in with the law and all that. Crashing drunk through a mobile home park isn't quite as fashionable as snorting your father's ashes (Keith Richards), or living in rehab and abandoning your kids (Britney Spears). No wonder he didn't make it real big as a rock star.

His "I Wish I Had A Girl" (who walked like that) was an anthem of my younger (single) days.

This came from the era when the ZZ Top Hot Rod set the standard for cars in videos. I find it interesting that he chose a Studebaker.

Cool find, Kevin; and so much of that video is familiar because it was shot right here in central Indiana - I recognize most of the areas in which the '50 convertible is being driven:

                        1. The Vogue Theater, shown first, is in the trendy near-north Indianapolis sub-community of Broad Ripple, right at the corner of North College Avenue and East 62nd Street, which is also known as Broad Ripple Avenue at that point. The Vogue is on the east side of North College Avenue.

Small World: Directly across from The Vogue on College Avenue, on the west side of College, is a Marathon Gas Station with a large storage lot around back. From that very Marathon Station's storage lot, in early 1963, I bought my first Studebaker; a 1955 Champion Regal Coupe!

                        2. The Ripple Barber Shop and surroundings are located around the corner from The Vogue, on East 62nd Street (Broad Ripple Avenue).

                        3. The 50s-style Diner into which he pulls later in the video is on the far west side of Indianapolis on the north side of U.S. 40 (The National Road), just east of Plainfield IN in a wide spot on U.S.40 known as Five Points.

Sadly, the last owner of that stainless-steel diner wanted to retire last year and could not find a new owner, so I'm fairly certain it is now closed...and may have even been scraped off. [V] It was an icon that had been there for decades: Many advertisements were filmed there through the years, and scenes from a few movies, too. Our Indy Chapter SDC had a meeting and ate there about two years ago.

                        4. At the very end of the video, he is seen in the '50 rounding a corner with a three-story or so building visible in the upper right. That is yet another corner in Broad Ripple, about two blocks east of The Vogue Theater corner.

                        5. Finally, I cannot positively identify the old-style gas station into which he pulls early in the video. I am fairly certain it would be along U.S. 40, west of Indianapolis between Indianapolis and the Illinois State Line, but I haven't been along that stretch recently enough to make a positive ID.

EDIT ADDED: I noted in the Police Report cited earlier, that Henry Lee Summer is said to be "from Brazil,IN." Brazil is right on U.S. 40 between Indianapolis and the Illinois State Line, as I mentioned in Item #5, above, so that adds credence to the idea that the old gas station might be along that stretch of road.

Now, I'm trying to figure out whose '50 convertible that is; I don't recognize it from around here even though all the video was obviously shot "in my back yard!" [:0]

Again, Kevin; good footage. Thanks for the link, and reminders of areas in which I've driven hundreds of times. BP

Keith Richards did NOT actually snort his father's ashes; he was being sarcastic to the reporter in his typical style when he said that, in response to what he considered a stupid question(stupid question=stupid answer). Reporters apparently can't tell the difference nowadays between truth and sarcasm, either that or they'd just rather print whatever sounds the most sensationalistic. I've given interviews for articles on various controversial animals(like Pit Bulls and snakes), and I know first-hand how they will twist your words and print them out-of-context to make it seem as though you said something totally different from what you really said.

I can't remember either Henry Lee Summer or the song; too bad he never did become that popular, otherwise maybe more younger people would have gotten exposed to Studebakers.
