Pickles comic strip, Jan.18.2019

Earl and Opal are out with their 1950 Starlight coupe in the Pickles comic strip, Jan.18.2019 . I haven't seen them on the road for quite a while.

I left a comment where the strip appears in gocomics.com . Maybe if a few more people do so, Earl and Opal will get out of the house more often.

I had not looked at the paper yet. Had to go find it.

I had not looked for Pickles yet today either. That's my evening reading. Unfortunately my local daily paper only runs Pickles in the Sunday paper. But, I found that using my tablet I could read the Washington Post online every day and Pickles was in every edition. And, it's in color on line while my local paper only runs it in black and white. Brian Crane is an interesting, laid back man. He has drawn Pickles for almost 30 years. He modeled Earl and Opal after his in-laws. In addition to explaining his life as a cartoonist a number of his panels are shown. Unfortunately the Studebaker doesn't appear in the write-up or video.

Reminds me of Lucy and Desi doing the same routine in the movie “ The Long Trailer” driving their yellow Mercury.

I wonder if Brian Crane owns a bullet nose. He seems to use a bullet nose Studebaker fairly regularly in his comic strips.

The car and trailer screech around a right turn into a very narrow side road.
"What are you doing? What are you doing?"

"You said turn right here, so I turned right!"
"Well I meant turn right here , Left. Only I didn't get a chance to finish."
"Turn right here... left."
"Yes, turn right here left."
"Do you have any conception of what it takes to turn one of these things around? We may have to go on for miles and miles!"

I love Pickles too. Sadly it comes with all the rest of the trash in the paper. So no Pickles. Thanks for sharing it.

Love it when the Studebaker is part of the comics. Only one small thing that should be cleared up, it's a 51 Starlight Coupe, but most people will not care. As a matter of fact, many people will think is must be the illustrators concept of a funny car.

According to something I read several years ago, he saw a neighbor's Studebaker and thought it looked right for his comic strip. He did not own one. If he had owned one he would probably not made this one a pillar-less hardtop.

Was Earl ever in a minor collision? The car has a 1950 bullet.

Yes; a '51 Starlight, minus its 'B' pillar, with a '50 bullet and a two-tone paint job. But, for the great majority of folks who enjoy Pickles, knowing nothing about Studebakers, it's the exposure WE appreciate.
