  • 62 gt trunk lid

Had some time today to get the beat up, rusty old 62 hawk trunk lid up into a heavy coat of primer so it could dry for a few days. I'm sure it will need a lot of straight board sanding and more primer before it's done. The way the latch is built it will be easy to go electric opener with a cable back up system.

I have a GT trunk moulding for sale. If there is any interest I will try to determine the shipping cost from Canada (Manitoba) to the USA. I may also put it on Ebay. minor marks and needs to have black paint finished.

Looks like a 64 trunk lid.

Steve, is that a '62 or '64 deck lid? I don't see the recessed area for the inlay. You do nice work, too bad I'm in Florida. Bill

Steve, I think that is the deck lid from your '64 Hawk. Speaking of your '64 Hawk, how is it coming along?

I'm sorry guy's but I pulled a bit of a fast one on you by not posting the rest of the pictures. It started out as a beat up 62 lid. You will notice there is no hole for a lock. I plan to go electric & cable so didn't see a need for one. There will be a button in the consul and a flipper leaver next to the seat. As they say, have tin and welder will travel.

If you don't mind my asking how did you address the rust inside the trunk lid? Rust bedevils all Hawk lids and it's an issue we all have to deal with. Thanks,
                    -Dwight.

Dwight The rust you see where the panel was cut out I cleaned up and primed and undercoated. The rust on the inside edge I left the tin that I welded on long enough to cover that when the lower lip was bent over. I was not concerned about the fact that you could tell it had been patched. I block sanded the primer this morning. First with 180 on the air file to knock the top down and then with 180 on a longboard. It even impressed me that it came out as straight as it did. I think other than a few small spots that need another coat or two of primer it could be painted as is. This is going a real dark color so it will get as least one more heavy coat of primer and block sanded again. I use a 2-k primer from Spain that fills like gang busters. I finished the mud work out in 36-40 grit and after priming and sanding with 180 there's not one sand scratch to be found. If you give it time to completely dry all the way through it never seems the shrink either.
