  • Winter driving in 1953

Southwest Missouri has had some very bad weather the last couple of days. We had rain, thunder storms, lightening, thunder, sleet, hail and snow and that was just Monday morning. Yesterday I backed my car out of the garage to take some pictures. I backed up about 25 feet out of the garagre and started slipping on the ice on the driveway. I stopped and put it Drive and started slipping again. I stopped the wheels and dropped it down in Low and still the wheels started to slip. I stopped and spread some ice melt around the back wheels. After taking my pictures I was able to get enough traction to drive back in the garage.
My question is, back in 1953 if I had had to go some where with this car I don't think I would have gotten very far past my driveway. When I drop the selector into Drive the back wheels were turning a lot faster than if I had a standard transmission. Granted my driveway was covered in ice and I would guess most drivers in 1953 would most likely not have tried to drive under the conditions.
How was it driving a Studebaker back in the day?

I wish it had a better background. After slipping in the driveway I did not want to attempt a different background.

                Thank you for compliment.

I always think hard tops look better with the windows down for pictures. It was very cold yesterday.

If it weren't for the Brand X and newer 5th wheel in the background, it could have been taken in 1953!
