Starter motor - where to buy?

Looking for reliable source of starter motors. My Autolite MDU 7005 on my 170 cid, 6 cyl OHC starter is dying. Sorry, I don't have a lot of faith in items on e-Bay/Amazon (if I'm misguided here, let me know).

A lot of A-G-S auto electric re-buiders have closed up shop but there are still some around. If you don't have one local you could always ship it out.
Some cater specifically to old car hobbyists.

Rebuilding starters and generators has always been a dicey business. It seems as if many of the rebuilders hired inexperienced workers and did shoddy work. At least that has been my first hand experience back in the 70's. Are they any better now that there are less of that type of starter and generators in circulation? Probably not.

I'll have some, but not for a few weeks. These will be gone through , cleaned up and rebuilt as needed.

If the fields and armature are OK, then clean it up, paint it, and polish the commutator and replaces brushes as needed.
DO NOT UNDERCUT the commutator, as the copper brushes and strong springs keep the insulating material worn down.

A local rebuilder did an excellent on my brother's starter from his truck. I agree about the eBay stuff. Some of it is just cleaned and painted and some is good. The hard part is telling the difference.

The difficulty with my sarter is that the drive gear that turns the flywheel is frozen in the starting position.

Yep, that's the way some of the drives are made. My friend bought a new one for his Army Jeep, and as soon as the seller handed it to Mike, he said "now don't play with it and spin it up the helix". So naturally Mike did just that. The seller stuck the new drive on a screwdriver shaft and held it to a high speed wire wheel to mimic the engine speeding it up to disengage it, and it released.
