My wife and I travel in the summer in our motorhome that likes to run in the 62 to 66 MPH range where it gets the best mileage in the power curve of the big Cat diesel. That's fast enough to safely stay on the Interstates, but we have found that there is usually an old US highway or a state highway paralleling the interstate within a few miles. Traveling those old highways is more fun, going through the small towns and burgs. True, we waste as much fuel as we save by not running 75 or 80 on the interstates, but slowing down for the towns and villages is fun, especially when you get down to 30 MPH, come to the sign that tells you the name of the place and the population............eight.
Moral of the story is: There are usually alternative routes that are more fun and safer to drive slower then playing pin ball on the Interstates. When driving an old car on these old highways gets a lot of thumbs up and waves from the other drivers, unlike the one finger waves gotten on the Interstate driving 20 or 30 MPH below the posted limit, which is being exceeded by 15 to 30+ MPH by many.
It's all about the journey, not the destination.
