You Never see a Wide box with those, apparently the Factory never offered any and very few have aftermarket ones but of course the only logical place will be below the Tail lights.

I wonder if Dodge did when they used that box.

My '61 Champ has the step side box so I purchased some LED floods along with a wire loom with a lighted on/off switch and plan to install them under the rear bumper. That could work in your case as well.

Maybe. Back then backup lights were not even common on cars. Most of the pickups I remember seeing with backup lights had something like fog/spot lights attached somewhere.

I would say "GO FOR IT!" Even if you are trying to keep it original for judging purposes. Back-up lights should be considered a SAFETY ITEM as much as a convenience feature. Thus...as in turn signals, and seat belts, backup lights should be zero points off for judging purposes. At least, that's my opinion. Installed above/below the tail lights, or under the bumper, where or what should be wide open to the preferences of the owner.

Previous owner put backups on my '61 Champ P2 just above rear bumper. Best place looks-wise, but probably a little too low for greatest effectiveness because of the close proximity of the bumper. Switch is on a separate panel along with fog-lite and extra cab lite switches (and one l haven't figured out yet!).

In case you want to mount them below the tail lamps and make them look factory: The 1954 Buicks had two small backup lights mounted on the panel below the trunk lid, and would fit nicely on any vehicle with a vertical rear body panel. 60 or so years ago, I mounted a pair on my daily driver 54 Aero Willys (was the only one on my block to have one!) and they looked great.

Sometimes back up lights for 1974-77 Honda Civics come up on eBay and they are perfect for almost any application where an under the bumper placement is desired. Such could be easily adapted to almost any Studebaker need...

Seems as good as Studebaker was about using parts that were already on hand, the surplus '59-'61 Lark back up lights would have been any easy add on...

These Chevy ones would look nice. The shape complements the Studebaker light. On the site where I found it was listed as 1960-1969.

Did Dodge have any backup lights on their own '57-'60 Sweptline boxes?

Then I've heard that my old New Process 540 doesn't have a fitting for a reverse light switch.....

No Stude. EVER, had a IN the Trans. mounted B/U Light switch.

The models that had B/U's: CARS, were on the Column or Floor Shifting Linkage.
No Vehicles I know of, of our vintages had switches IN the Trans.

If you can't Rig it up on the shifter, you will just have to use a Manual Toggle Switch and remember to use it!

How how would you put an external backup switch on a '63 NP540?

You would need a switch on the end of the Top shift Rail at the Reverse gear location, you may have to JB Weld it on there unless you want to risk drilling into the Cast Aluminum Top Cover Plate.

That would be why people usually put a Toggle Switch under the Dash.

ID:	1716943 This one has Fog and Back-UP light Switches below the "T" handle which MAY be for a Double Overdrive, as it already has a NP540 OD.

Yes that's a '63 Transtar 8E13-131 Dually with a 9 ft. stretched Champ P2 Box with P1 Fenders! Not mine, (I Wish it were!)
