1963 Avanti R2 project available near Sheridan WY

There's a 1963 Avanti R2 project available near Sheridan, WY. The ad has no details. My impression from the photograph makes me believe there is no engine installed, as there appears to be a light load on the front suspension.

Perhaps the northern Great Plains, Big Horn Mountains and entire Pacific Northwest have been consolidated into a "somewhere out there" edition of Craigslist. Sheridan, Buffalo and surrounding area are interesting and historic. But I definitely don't need another project (R2 or otherwise) to deal with. No engine? Something of a drawback.

Interior looks to be in very good shape. I bet you could spend a pretty penny to resurrect the interior of a rougher car. Seems like a good deal at $8k.

Didn't another red Avanti, in similar condition but complete just eBay on here for similar money? A rebuilt R2 engine and tranny is about $7,500 asking these days.

"Nothing more expensive than buying a cheap Avanti." Wise ones have said that in the past & I've learned the hard way. '63 R2 2658 taught me that lesson.

I have more money into the Speedsters than any of the Avantis I own. I believe that Avantis, Speedsters, Golden Hawks cost more because they are worth more. Because of that, they are usually finished to a higher standard (more time and money) than other models.

The young man that owns it realizes that it will cost him to restore it . He has been in contact with me many times asking advice, and parts costs. He does have some parts that aren't listed. The transmission was his biggest concern as he couldn't locate it.
if I remember from the pics he sent me, the engine was there, but apart.

I have a spare T-10 4 speed on a cart in my garage that I would sell if it is a 4 speed car.

I do have a spare powershift - condition unknown. I will be making a trip to Montana this summer and will be going through Sheridan. Let me know if that helps.

Several years ago I would have been interested in this car, but I would have a basic underlining question as to at what point is this a R2 if it does have have an R2 engine or possibly a proper tranny. R2 is advertised for its enhanced value but without its proper engine, not a fake stamped engine number, or its proper tranny, where is its value above any other Avanti in similar condition? If it is a titled R2, restoring it to R2 status is exceedingly expensive. Ken, Deltaville, Va
