There are some diehard Packard people who think Pacakrds made in Detroit are true Packards..Any made in South Bend are Studebakers in Packard clothing...

I think that no matter what some die hard Packard people think, '57 and '58 Packards were honest-to-God, certified, serialized, proper Packards. Mebbe not the Packards they would have built, but they were proudly built, Studebaker-Packard Corporation cars sold in Packard dealerships. "They" missed their opportunity to sue the Studebaker-Packard corporation for false advertising back in 1957! [)]

I have a couple of '57-'58 Packard 289s that have serial numbers very different from their Studebaker brethren. One of those engines in my '50 Starlight will proudly wear it's Packard badges. As far as I'm concerned, any argument to the contrary would be fruitless. [^]

A few components such as the taillights actually were carryover Detroit-built Packard components fitted onto the 1957/58 bodies. I believe the front bumper on the '57's were narrowed and welded in the center to fit as well. Anything else carried over from the Detroit Packards? I'm sure some emblems were as well.

              • I'll have to go look at them Mike. Both are some distance from my house but I'll be there this Sunday and get both serial numbers for ya. Both engines are supercharged. I'm sure one is a '57, (pulled it myself), and the other is supposed to be from a wrecked '58 Packard Hawk.

                  • I agree Sonny. I stated b4, the title says Packard, the car has Packard all over it and the company was, at the time Studebaker-Packard....Remeber in the 70's when people were buying Cadillac's & Buicks, only to find out GM had put in Chevy engines ?

I feel that the folks on the assembly line in South Bend were just as proud, and tried to save Packard, just as the folks on the Detroit assembly line..If the opposite had happened , they closed South Bend and moved Studebaker production to Detroit, would anyone have considerd those cars not to be Studebakers ??

                      • My dad had a 1958 Packard 4door sedan as a demonstrator when he sold Studebakers. It was black. That would be my choice for sentimental reasons.
