How true is the Volkswagon connection? I've never heard that one before.

Allen, it's true. The loophole in the treaty was plugged after a year.

By coincidence, the first of 12 Volkswagens I have owned was a 1965 model which undoubtedly was imported by Studebaker.

Allen, I thought for sure you had a copy of my book, My Father The Car, in which you would have read all about our Volkswagen deal, as well as the Richard Nixon connection.

The author of this story, Jil McIntosh, owns a Studebaker and has often written about the marque.

Gee Stu, I am sorry to say I have never read your book. I guess I was just to busy reading University texts for my degrees when I was involved with the Hamilton Chapter and it members.

In the Vancouver area there were several Studebaker dealerships the largest being Bill Docksteader Studebaker. The dealership was acquired by White Spot Datsun and used the export - import system Studebaker created. They obviously started importing Datsun cars and also sold Studebaker parts for some years thereafter. The Datsun dealerships changed to Nissan dealerships and are striving today. The Docksteader family is still in the auto business today selling Subaru. The Datsun, Nissan and Subaru cars were all Studebaker dealerships in the beginning here.
