  • Rats, another one got away!!

I thought a little pickup in the Portland area was all lined up and ready to go get. Ah, the contretemps of buying and selling. Looks like there was another buyer. Well to whomever got the little pink 60 Champ, Congrats and best of everything with it!

I thought everything was okay, however the seller said he was going to keep the ad up anyway (craig's list). Funny, he said it was there and I kept looking and no ad. disappeared around the fifteenth of last month. I was willing to send the money via PayPal but he didn't have an account and insisted I come up there to give him the cash. He said he was willing to wait till the fourth. Good thing I checked my email today as he sold the truck to someone local. Ah well, can't get all of 'em I suppose.

And no, thank you, I don't want any cheese or crackers to go with my whine.

If you are talking about that red (although faded) '60 Champ - V-8, 4 speed, short box, etc. there is a story that goes with it.
You will notice that the inside of the doors is dark blue? The Oregon State Police had a fleet of these Champ pickups and Oregon State Police vehicles of that era were all dark blue. Over the years there have been a few on the used market in this area.
Once I was talking Studebakers with a State patrolman and he said they were for patrolling mountain roads. He also said he would chase speeders on the freeway and that no one even got away! 3:73 rear axle ratio and 16" tires helped.

Gosh, I wouldn't want to be in a high-speed chase with a Champ. The steering would be terrifying at speed. Not to mention the top-heavy nature of the truck. Still, it only makes the angst of the loss sharper that the truck even had an interesting history as well. Not to mention that it was originally blue, my favourite colour!!

Well, remember this was when these Champs were fairly new so they probably felt pretty solid at speed. We probably all know the feel of a well worn Champ, but you were supposed to wear them out so you could return to your Studebaker dealer and buy a new one!

I've owned two '64 Champs and never had an issue with handling at speed and consider that the old Champs have a much lower center of gravity than lots of modern tin...

Well Grumpy, I'm told there is a considerable difference in the steering geometry of the 1960 compared to the '64. Wouldn't mind having a '64 myself. I'm told one can actually put on power steering and a regular power booster for the brakes. Would love to have a 3/4 ton champ so equipped.

Studeclunker, why don't you take a look at the guy selling those two champs up in Yreka on Craigslist? They have been listed awhile and recently lowered their price

Bruce Wheeler has a 64 1/2 Champ for sale. It has been in Colorado and Arizona all the time. It has a 3speed Truck Flightomatic, Red in color.

Bruce is nearly 90 so all the stuff he has is for sale. 64 Avanti, 33 Coupe, 63 9 Passenger Wagonaire, 39 Coupe Express, 64 Cruiser. He has an ad in Turning Wheels last month and this month for contact information.

I had incorrectly listed this as Bruce Sandburg instead of Bruce Wheeler. Bruce is just a kid of 78 which makes me an toddler at 64.

You do know there's the remnants of an 8E-12 in Weaverville, don't you? There's not much left from the pics:

I just kept the tires well inflated and I did put in power brakes

because I haven't seen them and can't find them.

Yeah, as it sits, that old fart wants four thousand dollars for that champ! Have you noticed he closed all the auctions before they ended? He's a greedy old cuss...
