  • Need GAS TANK for '57 Silver Hawk

The front seam of my tank seeps gas. Anyone have a good one for sale?

  • #2
I just sent my gt hawk tank down to Iowa with my son who lives close to Tanks Inc. I need to contact them this week so he can drop it off. The guy that I talked to there earlier said if they had a good tank to use as a model he would see if there was a way to modify one of their tanks to fit a Studebaker so either they could sell them or I could source them from them and sell them under my brand. I guess it all depends on how soon you need one.

Contact the "Radiator Lady" as her husband makes custom gas tanks along with their radiators & surge tanks (as used on Avanti's).

You might try these guys. I don't see gas tanks listed, but the last time they posted an ad on craigslist, they listed lots of old glass and gas tanks.

          Thank you!

That's a good thought. Thank you for your response. One of the guys in my car club suggested that I try FlexSeal on the seam to see if that might be a viable fix for a seeping tank. I think I'll try that to see if it works, then, if not, will likely contact the folks at Tanks inc.. Thanks again for your input.

Please keep us posted on what you find out. Gas tanks are always in demand and it would be nice to have a source for a replacement tank

If the tank is otherwise structurally sound, just resolder the seam all around. Did that with a T-cab tank and never had another issue with it.

Of course drain the fuel and flush with plenty of water first!

                  News from Tanks Inc. ?

Did you get your tank delivered to Tanks Inc. yet? What was their response? Will they be able to build or modify one of their tanks to fit your Hawk? You mentioned you might source them from Tanks Inc. and sell them under your brand. Is that an option?
Curious to know how you came out.
                  Thanks!

As soon as he gets a day off he will run it over I dont need it until spring and he's pretty busy as they are training him to be a plant manager at the power plant in Cedar rapids Ia. KIds one of those nuke engineer types. But gets paid very well. I talked to Justin at tanks Inc and he said some have used their tank # b-1a which fits a buick on a studebaker. so that is where I'am sure we will start.

If you want to try a sealer use Seal-All. It is resistant to gas and works great as a sealer or adhesive. I started using it after the epoxy tank repair stuff failed to stop my leak. My hardware guy suggested Seal-All because he had seen a guy fix a leaking motorcycle tank with it - as it was leaking. I used it on my speedster tank and it is still fine 5 years later. You can do several coats if needed and paint when dry. Amazing stuff and available at hardware stores, etc.

Welcome to the Dakota's Chapter Bruce. I just received a forwarded email from Kim Canfield in which you mentioned the need for a gas tank and it dawned on me to look at your location as I had just recently posted this reply.

My son got time yesterday to run my old tank over to tank inc. The closest thing they could find is the tank for a 41-50's Buick part # b-1d. $250.00 plus shipping. The fill spout is to far forward on the tank so that will need to be moved back or find some way to relocate the neck on the gt body and need a tube for the gas pickup installed on the front bottom of tank or use their sender unit with the tube in it and rework the gas gauge to work with it. It is about a 1' deeper a 1/2 " wider and 3" shorter in size. The deeper shouldn't be a big deal and the 1/2 wider is only 1/4 per side and 3 shorter is fine. May need to make some minor changes in the tank mounts but if the top of the tank sits below the top of the frame rails it will be fine. Nice thing is it's a new tank so any welding shop or radiator shop should be able to handle it.

The best option is to have a Radiator Shop weld that original tank up. They don't make them anymore you know!

Duane Miller used a new reproduction tank for a 56 Buick in his 53 Coupe. It required a little fabrication but was a really close fit.
