  • Luddington MI to Manitowoc ferry

If you are driving from the East Coast to Manitowoc, have a look at the Ssbadger.com website. It’s the last coal fired steam vessel in the U.S., makes the voyage across Lake Michigan once a day each way, 4 hour trip. It leaves Luddington at 9:00 am, returns from Manitowoc at 2:00 pm plus 1 hour time change. It saves driving through Chicago. Make your reservations now.

Have taken the Badger several times, it'll get you to Manitowoc relaxed by avoiding the insanity that is Chicago

I took it in 2018 on a motorcycle trip. $105-0ne way. Relaxed and watched a movie. Click image for larger version

What’s the fare if you bring a car? I’m going to the PSMCD’s which happen at exactly the same time. Makes it almost impossible to do both if you have to drive down to Chicago and back up the coast.

That looks tempting, but would be quite the price for 2 people with 2 cars... haha.

The S.S. Badger web site announced on Aug. 1 that there will be no more sailings this year, all trips cancelled. A few weeks ago, part of the structure that raises and lowers the ramp that serves the boat collapsed. Initially, they thought they could be back in action in a few weeks, but that has been determined as not possible. Hence, the ferry will not run again in 2023.

The alternative is to take the high-speed ferry from Muskegon, MI on the eastern shore to Milwaukee, then drive north to Manitowoc. The voyage is shorter, 2.5 hours, but the price is higher. Still, it cuts off driving through Chicago for many of us coming from the east coast.

The Lake Michigan Express costs about $700 round trip for a car and 2 adults - YIKES.
