  • Just announced: 2023 IM in Manitowoc, Wisconsin

I just saw on Facebook that the board has voted on next year‘s location for the IM. September 12-16th. Announced by Jim Pepper!

I would like to think that a board member or a member of the forum that is helping to host the meet would have released the announcement here on the forum. Not all of us use Facebook. I look forward to more details of the upcoming IM from the meet hosts or the board.

It’s OK, I am in fact a member of the forum. Also, I am aware that not everybody uses Facebook. Hence the reason I posted…

Bob, I appreciate your enthusiasm but you did not read my post number 2. A member of the forum that is helping to host the meet. That person would be a point person for the upcoming meet. I am happy we have the information, but just like the old game of telegram by the time the information gets to the end person the information could be wrong. Maybe it is too early but starting a post for the IM would be good, if for nothing else to avoid misinformation.

Thanks for posting. Happy to see that it is in the fall, a better time for me to travel.

Excellent time, that's the start of the best season of the year in the upper Midwest. My favorite time of year.

Was there any explanation as to the rationale? We all appreciate it's difficult to get chapters or regions to volunteer to host an IM, but two consecutive in the upper mid-west doesn't give members other regions their turn at a shorter drive.

That I do not know. I am sure that this will be discussed (and argued) ad nauseam in the coming months. I think it’s good news considering that there was some speculation as to whether there would even be any more international meets other than once every five years in South Bend.

Not sure if this will work, but I tried to get a link to Jim‘s video

OK guys, I am a member of the WRSDC (Wisconsin Region SDC) and will be involved in the production of the 2023 Internationl Meet in Manitowoc Wisconsin on Sept. 12-16 2023. At this point I have no idea what roll I'll be playing on the meet committee/team, so I can't answer any questions anyone may have. Jim Pepper is one of the main drivers of this meet but I believe the chairman of the meet committee is the WRSDC president, Steve Kanter. I can tell you that this meet is in honor of Buzz Beckman and Rick Recheck, both who passed away this past year and were very active members of our chapter and national SDC, and both resided in Manitowoc. This will be a very good meet as surprisingly there is quite a bit of fun things to do in that area and the meet layout should be very easy for members to use. More info will be forthcoming fairly soon, so be patient and make your plans to attend. Thanks to all who have already shown great interest! Bill Van Alstyne -Colgate Studebaker
p.s. Thanks Bob Andrews for getting the word out!

Thank you Bill. Three names! Now I hope you didn't just draw a target on you back I am making plans for 2 weeks for the meet. 5 days to drive, 5 days for being there and 5 days home. That gives me a year to get the Hawk running and me off my duff to get er dun.

Excellent news! Only a 6-hour drive for me.
One can even take their Studebaker from the Michigan side of the lake and ferry across on the Ludington-Manitowoc, or so I assume.

It's no secret that SDC has been having trouble getting chapters to volunteer to sponsor an IM. As of a few weeks ago, no one had signed up for any IM after the current SB meet. It is my understanding that the Wisconsin Chapter volunteered to sponsor the 2023 show as homage to Buzz Beckman, who did so much for SDC over the years.

Historical note: the SS Badger which is the cross-lake ferry between Ludington and Manitowoc, is the last coal-fired, steamship operating in the US. It was built in 1953 for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. It has received special dispensation by the EPA to continue to operate because it has been designated as a national historical landmark .

As soon as I pulled out my Wisconsin highway map and located Manitowoc, I saw the dotted line for the ferry to Ludington, MI. The trip is about 4 hours and you can sign up for a stateroom on overnight trips. Soundsa like this could be a neat adventure! Also for those of us in the eastern US, this means we don't have to drive a Studebaker through or around Chicago and Milwaukee. I didn't know all that historical info about the Badger. I'll have to look it up.

Does the Michiana Chapter plan to boycott the event unless it's moved to the first week in May?

I'm very happy that we have a date and location for next year, and thanks to the Wisconsin Region for stepping up. It's not ideal for the western half of the U.S. but certainly better than not having an International meet. Hope to be able to attend.

Ah yes. Only 3200 miles and estimated 31 hours(one way).
As many times as I listened, the gal who kept stating "awesome" while Jim was talking, completely obliterated the month in which it is due to be held. Can anyone confirm the actual date?
Why was this SDC Forum not chosen for the announcement?
Like so many others, I do not do Facebook.
Probably a pie in the sky but I would still like to know when it is slated.
I must be out of the loop but why would a chapter boycott the event?

From what I learned in South Bend it’s apparently September 12 thru 16, and I did NOT hear this from our International Meet Coordinator.
