2022 Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet May 4-7, why is the meet so early? There can be uncertain weather & even snow in early May.

I'm sure you will get a more authoritative answer, but I can provide a couple of reasons. For many years, the museum and local chapter have sponsored an annual meet in early May. And by tradition, we return to SB every five years for the IM. It seemed unfair to demand that they sponsor TWO meets every fifth year. And SDC meets move around the calendar, depending the cost and availability of facilities, hotel rooms, etc. No matter what date is selected, someone is unhappy or inconvenienced.Skip Lackie

Years ago when I led a children's ministry at our church (120+ children and 25+ adult volunteers) we learned really fast that no matter how hard we tried to plan our calendar of events to avoid conflicts and bad weather, someone always mentioned they had conflicting plans for the dates we selected, or the weather was not what we expected. We decided that it was impossible to avoid conflicts, so we just planned our calendar to fit the larger church calendar and avoid major family holidays. We figured if the ministry to the children was important enough to the parents and guardians to get the kids to the events, the kids would be there. Otherwise, they would make a choice not to attend and choose to be somewhere else.
Life is full of choices and is always changing.Mark L

Hello everyone. There are many good points here, and believe me the Michiana Chapter has tried to find a little better date, but the bottom line is timing, and manpower. The venue is booked for other events or blocked out for the County Fair. Add to it Notre Dame graduation, football, that fill up the hotels, and there goes the year. If we vacate the date in May for an International Meet we will lose the date and there will not be a Meet in South Bend at all. Also, and we have tried it, doing a May Meet and an International Meet in the same year is nearly impossible. We have a great group of people in the Michiana Chapter giving their time, but please remember that May Meet is nearly as large or larger than most International Meets. It's pretty labor intensive, and there is a limited amount of people to do it. So, see you in South Bend in May. I'm pretty sure your Studebaker will not vapor lock. Bring your Winter coat, boots, shorts, or suntan oil. You may experience all of these in the same week. Please bring sunshine. See you in May.

And Bob the BEST part about the early May date is my wife has slot machine days planned at the Michigan City casino with......FREE rooms (should I wonder how much those free rooms cost me
). Wonder if I should work out a program where gaming losses could be applied to a dollar balance for Stude purchases ?

South Bend in May sure beats South Bend in July or August. There was one International Meet in downtown South Bend (I forget the year) and it was hot, humid and the outside participants and vendors got hammered by a thunderstorm that blew through the area.Last edited by dpson; 01-08-2022, 12:26 PM.Dan Peterson

I agree with Paul and others that May would much more pleasant than July or August.Originally posted by paul shuffleburg View PostI'm in favor of May over July or August. I never realized SB could get so hot until the 2012 IM meet.
I was in South Bend in 2007 and 2012, both years were hotter than I care for!

I think I have been to the South Bend May activity 4 times in the last few years. Two years the weather was good and twice it was cold /rainy. The IM when we were vending in the unheated building was misery, but we will do it again."In the heart of Arkansas."
