  • Ignition: Colorado emissions test

Colorado gives me 3 choices for plates on my '60 Champ:
    1) Truck Plate... Pass Emissions test.... $80 a year.
    2) Antique Vehicle plate, no emissions.... $250 for 5 year plate.
    3) Horseless Carriage, no emissions.... $18, limited to from shows etc.

As I don't anticipate owning the truck more than a year or two and I plan on using it to parade 4 x 8 signboards for our next President from now until November I opted for #1.

However, it failed the test this AM with 1444 HC PPM at idle when there is a 1000 HC PPM threshold. At 2500 RPM it is 820 HC PPM. Since all the ignition parts are fresh, the issue seems like adjustment issues to me. My first thought is that idle is only around 450 perhaps increasing it to say 750 would cause a better burn.

Any other thoughts/suggestions on timing or additives would be appreciated.

    Thank you for your advice.

Move to Nebraska, no emissions! Just kidding. Increasing the idle speed sounds like the thing to do first, adjust idle mixture on the lean side. Are you at altitude? Even if you are at altitude the PPM at higher rpm's indicate the truck must have the proper jets.

EUREKA !! ... idle @ 1000, leaned out idle jets and retested @698 idle and 796 @ 2,500... PASSED !!! Now to back down the idle a bit.
