  • Ignition: 40 distributor swap

Has anyone changed a 40 flat head distributor out and replaced it with a 1955 distributor. The 55 is a tad longer and won't seat next to the 40 block. Any suggestions?

Provided you are matching Champion to Champ, or Commander to Comm, I am surprised.

Not to be a smartalek, but are you sure that the end of the distributor shaft is seating into the oil pump drive,
    and if so,
have you eyeballed the distributors side by side to see where the difference is?

Welp the shaft on both are the same. I took the vacuum can bracket and the clamp for the timing, off the 40 Dist. put them on the 55 Dist. Everything matched up except the 55 Dist. has the Vacuum canister mounted to the housing of the dist. which hits the generator and prevents timing adjustments, the 40 Champ vacuum can has an external bracket which sits lower and allows for adjustments. I was able to talk to Bill C. and he confirmed what I discovered this morning. By the way he is no longer doing business. What a shame.
      Thanks
