  • Cool/Heat: Engine temp/timing advance

  • #2
Never seen your car and you are short on specifics, but I am not aware of any combination that calls for 32 degrees total advance, if that is what you have?
I would start by dialing the timing back 5 degrees. It is an issue of combustion efficiency, to much advance will cause a loss in power plus overheating.
Also might be a good idea to pull the plugs and check their condition before you melt something.

As a rule advancing will raise operating temperature simply because earlier ignition exposes the internals to heat longer transferring more to the coolant. Retarding will raise exhaust temperature as more heat goes out the exhaust. The reason it doesn't ping yet runs hotter likely due to the vacuum advance. Under acceleration the vacuum advance has no effect. Your timing is base plus mechanical. At higher cruising speeds you have base, all mechanical advance plus vacuum. If you open throttle you lose the vacuum which retards it preventing detonation.
