  • Body / Glass: C/K Windshield and Back Glass Weatherstrip

I have seen some past posts about these weatherstrips, (53-61 c/k). But is there a "BEST" current supplier or are they all made by one vendor. I know some of you have installed some recently. Lets hear about your experiences and recommendations please.

I gotta plead ignorance here Altair, what does your tool do??? are you installing rubber first then glass? or does this get rubber to lay over body flange. I have helped install a few and when done right the glass "Rolls In" and rubber pulls in over flange. if done wrong lower rubber flange sticks straight in and glass isnt set in properly. please explain. I set the ss trim in the rubber then the glass in the rubber and then the top portion of the assembly was placed over the flange and held firm then the lower rubber component was pulled inch-by-inch over the flange with the "tool".Click image for larger version

I have also done this job using string, by placing a string around the rubber flange held in place with dots of rubber cement and lubricated with window cleaning solution. The string is extracted as it pulls the rubber over the flange. The window goes back in in minutes.

Thanks Altair, have done the string thing but always set bottom in first with rubber over flange then pulled string up both sides then across top watching for rubber to "Roll In" over flange. always a fun job for sure! Thanks Doofus

Have done many 50's windshields and back glasses and the 'string' or 'vinyl covered wire' is the proper and easiest way to go.

Valerie Hansen. Replacing this is a hellish experience - at best! I think the thing to do is cut those stupid flanges of the stainless trim strips. I've frustrated a body shop and 2 different car restorers! Most repo rubber just doesn't fit!

That's because non Studebaker specific restoration shops don't have a clue, and try to set the stainless AFTER the glass is installed. WRONG!!!!!
You MUST install the stainless, rubber, and glass as a unit into the car.

The back glass is a real challenge... but it can & has been done. Windshield is easy... remember to use a small rope; not a large string (That rubber will cut).

Thanks, everyone!! So. I guess this answers my question. "Do they all come from one source " ? So Valerie Hansen is the one?

I also have very good luck with Studebaker Glass and Rubber. Do I have that name right? I think so. I believe they're in the Spokane, Wa. area. Nice guys.
