  • Engine: 1961 V8 paint codes

    I had a local PPG jobber scan in the silver and orange colors of my engine. I thought these codes may be useful to someone if they wanted to have their engine paint mixed instead of using rattle cans. This code is for Deltron single stage urethane.

    It should not be hard at all to find plain, common Hi-Temp 500 degree Ceramic Aluminum Silver Engine Enamel which IMHO would be better than "Body" Paint and just as correct.

    Of course the Red/Orange Valve Cover Paint could be a shade off from the Redder of the two Chev. Red/Orange Engine Enamels, but without a match-to right next to the rattle can painted one, no one could tell.

      Yep! Single stage urethane, or any urethane for that matter, may not enjoy engine temperatures.

        I concur. Your friendly local parts store will have it. After all, high temp engine silver paint is silver paint. The only decision you have to make is what brand suits your fancy or wallet. Have fun!

          Dupli Color engine enamel has worked well on Turbo Charged Stude for years, give it a try. trick is a clean surface. Luck Doofus

            Hold on guys, I am not trying to encourage anyone to use mixed paint vs. a rattle can. I am just offering up some color codes in case anyone is interested. If you are getting good results with what you are using, stay with it.

            I have no first hand experience as to how well it will hold up. I will try to remember to report on it in about 10 years. I did a lot of reading and talked to a couple restoration Pro's before I made the decision to use single stage urethane on my car. The guys that do restorations for a living say they use epoxy primer and SS urethane on their engines all the time and don't have any problems. I talked to the PPG techline and they say they know people use it a lot and they don't hear about problems, but as a company they don't "endorse" it for that use. Their paint is tested up to 220F without problems. They suspect it will begin to fail somewhere up around 300F. I know it is going to discolor around the exhaust manifold, but so will every other paint on the market. I can also say that I have never seen the guys on TV (don't lie, I know you watch them too) use a rattle can to paint the engine of a $100K restoration project.

            I agree with Doofus. Regardless of what kind of paint you use, you have to get it clean and prep it right . If you don't it will certainly fail.
