  • Transmission / Overdrive: Flightomatic clutch cylinder

    What's the difference between a 1541171 (non-floor shift car) and a 1554227 (floor shift car) clutch drum. I have them both sitting on the bench but see no difference.

    The area where the band rides should be wider in the powershift. They used larger bands. Also, isn't one three planetary gears, and the other one four?

      Sorry I should have said this is the front clutch. The front band runs on the rear clutch.

        All the rear bands are the same width, the front bands are wider on the heavy duty and powershift transmissions. On those units the front drum is also wider. The wide band measures 1.93, the narrower band measures 1.63 , not a big difference. Lou Cote

          Claude, If you look closely at the inner diameter of both drums you should see a slight difference in the diameter of the angled hole through each. I believe the floor shift variety allows more pressure in behind the aluminium piston.

            Just got an email from John Metzker. He said the same thing about the oil hole. Seems to me the pressure would be the same. The increased volume would make a quicker application. Funny, the 1554227 drum is used on the 6 cylinder transmissions.

              All of the differences between the Standard Flight-O-Matic and the Power Shift are designed to allow it to live with the Manual 1-2 and 2-3 Shifts that are available.
