  • Engine: What makes it an 'R' series engine

I have a '55 champion with a '62 289. The PO installed an electric fuel pump and removed the original pump. The electric pump does not work and I would like to put an original pump back on the car. I have been looking and there are pumps that say they are either for or not for 'R' type engines. How do I tell if it is an 'R' or not. The block is a replacement block and there is no serial number.

    Thanks,
    Lee

A RELACEMENT BLOCK WILL USE EITHER OF THE PUMPS.!
The only difference is that the "R" series pumps were for the high performance engines.
Your 1955 will take a standard pump.
Stay away from the Airtex pumps sold by most vendors.
Contact Phil Harris for an original rebuilt pump. http://www.fairbornstudebaker.com
Both Carter and AC made good pumps.

If your engine is a 1962 engine, it is not an R series engine (they were only in the 1963-1964 model years).

The fairbornstudebaker web site seems to still be under construction.
I'd rather be driving my Studebaker!

Best to give Phil a call 937-878-1576. Has taken care of me several times.

Or call Dave Thibeault at 978-897-3158 (Mass) He also sells the rebuild kits for the original fuel pumps.
