  • Cool/Heat: which air conditioning compressor port on my 63 avanti is the low pressure

I just bought a 1963 avanti and want to recharge the ac system. I bought a 12a kit and am going to attempt to charge it with the help of my mechanic who has the equipment and gauges to evacuate dry and recharge the system. I looked through my workshop manual and found no mention whatso ever of the ac compressor (weird) My question is which hose is the lowpressure side and looking through the forum I read that the two valves need to be turned to the right about half way after the hoses are connected. Then recharge and return them all the way left to back seat. Is this correct?
Which is the low side and am I thinking correct?

    Thanks for the help

As installed on the Avanti, it's the one closest to the block. Yes, you are correct in the position of the valve. Turn it counter clock wise when you are done.

Thank you. Hopefully it will charge right up. Sat for a couple of years. No body knows if it had r134 or r12. So, I bought a kit that is r12a and comes with the oil and r12 replacement canisters as well as leak sealer. a. do I have to replace the drier canister or can I just evac and dry. B. will the kit work ok. Sorry for sounding so ignorant just trying to keep it original and simple,

Low pressure hose is the larger one. Hi pressure is the smaller one.

First I would check the system with the gauges to see if there is anything in the system. It is illegal to discharge the system to the atmosphere.
There should be a S and a P cast into the head of the York compressor. As has been previously stated the larger hose is the S suction hose. it is the hose that goes into the evaporator inside the car.
If you are going to change the oil in the compressor you will need to remove the compressor. A good time to service the oil pressure spring.
I would not put any sealer in the SC system. If it leaks fix the leak. The vacuum test will show up a leak.
As for the dryer; if the system has been sealed I would not change it. Nor do I know where to acquire a direct fit replacement.

thanks. I have a friend that has the recovery system and vacuum. I didnt mean i was going to change the oil in the compressor. What comes in the kit is a can of mineral spirits or something that goes into the system. Not sure. It comes with a dvd to explain. I will let you know when I receive it. Thanks for everyones help. Love my studes.
