  • Engine: Pre lubing 6 cylinder flathead

I always believed that with the Studebaker flathead six you could remove the distributor and prelube the engine by spinning the oil pump. I was very surprised to learn when I took the piece from an old distributor and tried to turn it by hand it can't be done. Am I missing something.?

The oil pump is driven off the cam shaft.

Not sure about a six, but with a V8 you can. I took an old distributor and ground the gear down to where it does not touch the cam gear. I just drop that distributor in, and then use whatever is handy to spin the distributor shaft.

On 6 i pack oil pump gears with light grease. pull plugs, coil wire. use mech, guage and crank engine with starter. wont take long to get up oil pressure. Doofus

          Studebaker thought of almost everything!
On the champion Engine the recommended method is to remove the 1/8" Pipe Plug in the Oil Pump Cover and fill the pump with Oil, you can't get any better than that.
