My new to me car with 3speed and OD has a bad ring gear and starter gear. I only know this because after it came off the transporter, the starter just whirred. So the need to explore. Very chewed up. I found there is a replacement bendix and ring gear. Can the flywheel be pulled just by removing trans and OD? Any thing special to be wary of? I have ordered the shop manual from the Museum but has not arrived yet.

While you have the flywheel off to replace the ring gear, absolutely have it surfaced and strongly consider replacing the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and U-joints. They're cheap and much easier to do now than later.

Pay heed to what Jack has said. You'll also need heat as in oxy/acy torch to heat the new ring gear in order to expand it so its and easy install. And wise decision on getting the shop manual. Id suggest you also by the chassis and body parts manuals. very good manuals and will assist you in how it all goes together. After all these years you'll find evidence of folks who worked on it who should have found something else to do :-) PS put your location on your profile, you'll find the studie community a helpful bunch and if someone is local I'll just about guarantee they'll come by to assist or at least drink your beer.

Thank you. I am in Savannah, GA thus the forum name. I had heard previously from the leader of the local chapter and plan to be active but since I am now a non-starter (Hah!), the events will have to wait. Agree with you on the clutch stuff. I plan on having a machine shop do the ring gear and resurfacing. I did not know there were separate manuals. Have to see what's in the shop manual first. Apparently they are not on CD's?

Studebaker International has the CD's. Order their catalog, also. Good to have around. www.studebaker-intl.com Good luck. Make sure you have the right bolts holding in the starter. While it is apart, clean all of your connectors, they get a layer of stuff on them over the years.

I have had the flywheel surfaced, new clutch disc, rebuilt plate, new starter ring gear, new bearing and starter drive is in progress. But I forgot when I pulled it out which way the disc goes. According to the manual, it LOOKS LIKE the disc smaller hub goes to the rear, but the drawing is not clear enough for me to be sure. Also, one of the starter mounting bolts is bent ever so slightly. Replacement bolt? The above reply seems to imply N/A. Surely a machine shop can make a new one from scratch?

The deeper part of the offset goes towards the rear of the car. The springs may hit the flywheel bolts if put in backwards.Bez Auto Alchemy
