  • Engine: Accel oil at Walmart

Might help some to know Walmart has Accel oil in 10w30 and 10w40 . It is made for older engines and has at least 1100 PPM Zinc in it . Sales here for $2.67 a quart.

ACCEL?? I thought their Store Brand was Something? Tech in the Blue Bottles. Never heard of Accel, is it Walmart's Brand now?

Walmart has carried that Accel brand for some time. I think it's SD rated so it's definitely not for newer vehicles.

It said on it 88 and older. I just mentioned it because of zinc content . Most oils have dropped the zinc out of their oil . The zinc helps cam bearings and lifter friction on cam . later models have roller lifters and don't need it .

Thanks Randy, that should be another good, less expensive alternative to ZDDPlus additive or Valvoline Racing.

I am sure that we are all quite aware of the lack of ZDDP problem in MOST new Oils, that has been beaten TO DEATH here many times with a few actually disagreeing, so it is pointless to get into that again.

We have only experienced this since I believe Nov. 2007, so the affects of using "shelf" New Car Oil will take quite at lot of miles to show their ugly face.

You know, you can lead em to water, but...

I hate to admit that I went there but I did. I needed oil for my 8hp briggs. That accel stuff was the only oil available in straight 30 weight. I noticed it does not carry the API "Service Symbol Donut" on the product label. I didn't really care because it was the least expensive and it is just a stickin mower.

No worries, the "Donut" marked Oils are for Catalytic Converter equipped Vehicles.

                  Max vs Accel

I'm naive regarding oil chemistry so before I rushed out to drain the Valvoline Max and put Accel in I looked up the chemistry on the "Max".
                  Accel:
                  Zinc, % mass 0.085
                  Phosphorous, % mass 0.072
                  Calcium, % mass 0.214
                  Molybdenum, % mass 0.008
                  I
                  ron, % mass 0.023
                  Sulfur, % mass 0.289
                  Nitrogen, % mass 0.102
                  Sulfated Ash, % mass 0.92

                  Valvoline Max:
                  Sulfated Ash 1.0
                  Zinc 0.083
                  Phosphorus, wt% 0.077
                  Calcium, wt.% ..210
                  Sodium, wt% .048

If I'm only looking at Zinc, there is virtually no difference between the two. What am I missing?

Yes, Max is $16.17 for 5 qt at W-Mart and several bucks higher elsewhere compared to $13.35 for Accel for 5 qt. I used Max in a Caravan for 260,000 miles and the inside of the filler cap was still clean as new. Check the inside of the filler cap on any used car on the lot and you have a pretty good idea what the tubes and passages inside look like.

So price aside is there any good reason to switch. Above conversation suggests zinc in oil is hard to come by but is zinc the only thing of importance?

the phosphate. look up ZDDP here on search or google. there are several oils that still have it included for sale, plus a ZDDP additive that our vendors and others sell.

some folks say the ZDDP is not needed in our engines, but i've read quite a bit about it, and would rather not take the chance.

                        we report, you decide.

I wouldn't change from max to accel if you already have it in your motor and having good results . I mentioned it because my 350 had problems over me running Castrol Gtx in it . I have run the Gtx in my 2002 4..0 Grand Cherokee for 182,000 miles and no problem , and run it in my 2009 5.7 Hemi Grand Cherokee. But in my 350 in truck ,it wore the cam bearings and camshaft . I needed something with Zinc , found this at a reasonable price and posted it. Not to make people change, but to make people know it is out their .

Sodium .048? What is Salt doing in the Valvoline Max? It's not in the Accel.
