  • Ignition: Tune up specs

Unfortunately, my '64 Commander came to me with NO documentation. My car has an I6 engine with auto transmission. I need COMPLETE tune up specs for my I6 Commander. I've found partial tune up specs at http://carnut.com/specs/gen/stud60.html however, I need complete tune up specs including idle speed, etc. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

    Respectfully,

    Most specs here...

Idle speed is probably around 500 in D, but l'd set it where it likes it best. The same with timing. The spec calls for 2 degrees initial advance, but you can probably crank in a few more for better performance.

Be sure to set the dwell before you set the timing.

Since it didn't come with documentation, you probably should get some. The Shop Manual and the two parts catalogs are pretty much essential items. Get them here...

      What Dick said..

On the timing...he notes a..."few"... Up to just shy of detionation...as much as it will stand. Milage, drivability, even a little water temp. help with more thAn the book says to use.

Before you spend a lot of money on this car, check if the cylinder head is cracked.
This is why many of the 1961-64 six cylinder cars were scrapped.
Check for exhaust gasses in the cooling water and water in the oil.
You can buy an exhaust leak detector at your flaps, it is added to the coolant in the radiator and turns color when
exhaust gasses get into the cooling system.
