  • Body / Glass: Fender Mount Bolts

    The 47 Champion 4 door is coming along. It is in the shop getting new floor panels, new to it doors, trunk and fenders. I am wondering if any one of the vendors sells a hardware fender mount kit or even some assortments of the fasteners that mount the fenders, front grill, etc. It would be great to get a kit for the whole car even with extras, it would be nice to start with all the correct hardware.
    Any ideas on this anyone?

    While in the process of reassembling my 1950 Champion I sat down one evening with my Chassis and Body Manuals a came up with a list of every nut an bold needed to put the car back together, and believe me, it was in pieces. Then a trip to a local shop, I kid you not, "Evansville Nut and Bolt", resulted in a complete set of clean and correct fasteners. It was worth the effort.

      When I was doing my '48 coupe, I went to a major distributor of fasteners. They informed me that they would only sell in full box quantities. I didn't buy any from them. Instead, I found another local "mom & Pop" style fastener business and bought the exact quantities I needed. I also put the car back together with stainless nuts and bolts where possible. If I had bought box quantities of every size I needed, it would have been one of the most expensive items of the restoration.

      Not only did I buy from the small fastener company, but I went on to sign up dozens of additional huge industrial accounts for them. Unfortunately, the owners reached retirement age, sold the business to another large corporate distributor...and I no longer have my source. I'm back to paying confiscatory hardware store prices. I'm happy I don't have a major restoration in the works now and don't need large quantities of nuts and bolts.

        Identifying your fasteners with the factory parts catalog may take a bit of extra time but the frustration you avoid in the re-assembly is like relaxing on a terrace. Many of the automotive fasteners are peculiar to their application and can only be obtained by going to, or contacting a specialty shop like Restoration Specialities. http://www.restorationspecialties.com/ Many of them are readily available at your local NAPA, Carquest or O'Reilly's.
        Other items may be even more specific, yet still generic. ie. Studebaker part #1905X14 is a machine screw 5/16"-18x3/4" countersunk phillips stainless screw that attaches the outer lower corner of the grill surrounds of the '53-'54 to the front fender aprons of the C/K models. Only two are needed and for no other application. Not automotive specific but odd enough that your local ACE hardware probably doesn't stock; nor Fastenal. On occasion you may decide to spend 2 dollars plus 2.50 shipping at someplace like Bolt Depot to procure only the two screws you need. http://www.boltdepot.com/catalog.asp...FctQOgoduTEAEQ
        I still have not found fillister head Phillips stainless screws for my tail light lenses. I settled for slotted. Haven't you noticed?

        The satisfying hunt for just what we need is a huge part of the satisfaction we achieve in the process.

          There was a guy at the Colorado meet selling light bulb kits. His businesss had Lark in the name I think. Sounds like bolt kits would be an excelent idea fo him to wotk on!

            I have found a lot of hardware for my '64's at Sears Hardware, a local Ace, as well as two local Mom & Pop's. They all carry stainless as well. Rob in PA.
