What part number should I look for to replace my 63 289 distributor? There are a few on eBay...

Or step up and buy one of Dave T-Bows new electronic distributors, they are:

I looked at the distributor advance curves for various years of V-8 engines and they all looked the same to me. I imagine the super motors are different, but I pretty much think that any Studebaker V-8 can swap distributors with any other.

The best ones seem to be the 53-58 Delcos without/before windows in the cap - like the one in the eBay listing. Once you grease the advance weights and put in a Petrtronix, they are trouble free.

The Delcos with the windows are the rarest, and have always seemed the most sought after. Probably because of their ease of adjusting the points. But if installing Pertronix, that's a non-issue. They are also easiest to get parts for locally.

The advance curve in the 232 distributors is slightly different then the later 259 or 289 distributors. The original distributor would have been a Prestolite and if I remember correctly the part number is IBP 4108. An earlier Delco unit like Radio Roy described is one of the better choices for your engine as it's a bunch cheaper and I believe better than the Delco window distributor. A Dave T-Bow Mallory distributor is also a good choice if you want to spend the money. I'm using rebuilt Prestolite IBP 4012 R1 distributors in my engines as they are dual point with ball bearing breaker plates and with the upgraded weights with bushings they haven't caused me problems with worn out advance weights.
