  • Engine: Replacing Head Gasket

I need to replace the head gasket on my '59 Lark VI engine. I've already ordered the gasket from Studebaker International.
What I need to know is what's the best gasket sealer to use? I've heard that the copper spray gasket sealer is the way to go.
    What do you guys think?

Copper spray, go for it. Spray it on both sides of the gasket (you dont' get overspray on the engine this way) let it dry enough to become tacky, apply it to the block, set the head on it and go to town (with the head bolts).

I use the spray copper coat on head gaskets. It's easy to use and doesn't make a mess. Just don't spray the stuff around anything with a good paint job as it is really tough to remove. Also the use of gloves is recommended as it is also hard to remove from skin, I learned that the first time I used the copper coat spray. Bud

As an added note, some of the head bolts go through to the cooling system, so use sealer on the head bolts to keep water from wicking up around the threads. Bud

I know this may sound silly, but remember when using the copper spray, shake the can again before each spraying.... and I mean shake the can often... like spray 2 or 3 seconds, shake, spray 2 or 3 seconds, shake, etc. The stuff settles fast in the can due it being metallic. This ensures an even coat of copper spray over both sides of the gasket.
Also, hang the gasket from a coat hanger or some wire. The first spray should be a quick even and light coat of copper. Then let it set for a few minutes before you spray again. This really helps prevent drips.
Good luck. You should be back in business in no time.

Make sure you know which way the gasket goes on before you coat it otherwise you could end up with it on reversed, I have seen it on a 59 VI I had. It does make a difference as some of the holes are different sizes depending on which way it goes on. With the head machining don't be afraid of how much has to come off I have taken .100" off from stock without any problems but I don't suggest doing that but it can be done.
