  • Engine: Important changes if a 59 Golden Hawk has a 289, automatic and rear end from a 1964 Cruiser?

I have my first Hawk on its way to me, a 59 Golden Hawk with a 289, automatic and rear end from a 1964 Cruiser.

Is there anything that may trip me up by not making it clear to mechanics and such that my running gear is 1964?

Something along the lines of "I did XXXXX to your car and it blew up! If only you had told me that it was really a 64 and not a 59, we could have saved it!"

    Thanks in advance!

Well (maybe) fortunately you will probably never find a Mechanic running or working for a Modern "plug-n-play" Auto Garage that will know what a '59 Stude. engine looks like enough to have any more problems than he already has, having NEVER seen ANY Studebakers!

The only thing I can think of is that when changing Oil, you look up a '64 Full Flow Oil Filter Wix/NAPA 1049 or equivalent not a '59 partial flow type.

Maybe ask Don if he installed DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid as is often done now to preserve the M/C, wheel Cylinders and basically the whole system.

Otherwise a "Serviceman" may add DOT 3 or DOT 4 Standard Glycerin/Alcohol Brake Fluid, ruining the whole system.

I always "TAG" the M/C when using DOT 5, so that "may" not happen.

Ah, Phil FYI, make that '59 "Silver" Hawk!

That's exactly the kind of info I am looking for.

Don did indeed tell me that he used DOT 5 in the brake system and dextron in the transmission. I'll take your excellent advice on labeling the M/C

Yeah, thanks... I know better... But I started calling them Golden Hawks 30 years ago when I didn't know the difference and I have yet to shake the habit!

Hopefully I'll get it straight in my future posts!

With the updated drive train and any other updated items, it may qualify for "Platinum Hawk" status.

I like the thought...And on a similar vein, since it will never be all original, I've been thinking of taking the bits and pieces that appealed to me from different year Hawks (like two tone paint, bucket seats) for my 59. It won't be "right", but it would definitely be "mine!"

I put bucket seats from a later Hawk or Lark (the guy I bought them from didn't know) in my 58 Hawk
and 57 Golden Hawk style door panels.

That's very nice. I think my wife would approve of the nice comfy seat bottoms. (that's one of the reasons the 2011 Mustang is on its way out - she finds the seats, and especially the severely canted head rests, uncomfortable)

Well, if its painted gold,...it would be a 'golden' Hawk.

Gold would have been one of my first choices, but of course this one is Tahiti Coral - so I'm thinking of calling her "Cora". My wife says she has never named a car before, but I figure it's about time!

Wow valleyguy, it looks like you are in desperate need of some Studebaker Escutcheons under those Window Cranks or the correct length shaft in the Window Regulator before it ruins that nice upholstery!

Not really, it does have (or had, its sold) the escutucheons, just hard to see since I put in a little too much
stuffing behind those panels. The handles worked fine though.
