  • Engine: Studebaker Valve covers for Small block Chevy

    Good Morning
I am working on my 52 Champion convertible project and have installed a
350 Small block in it. I think it would be cool if I could find valve covers
that have Studebaker (chrome or Alum.) on them. Does anyone know where I can find them.
I am hoping due to the fact Studebaker used the 283 chevy engine someone
    makes them.
    Thanks
    Greg

Stude valve covers match up quite closely to the newer SBC centerbolt heads. There are some posts on this but I'm to lazy to find them now.

SoCal makes an adapter to add old SBC covers to center bolt heads. http://www.est1946.com/so-calvalvecoveradapters.aspx

I don't know why you couldn't use the adapters to put Stude valve covers on older SBC heads as all the hole necessary are there. Might take some massaging but it looks do-able

A friend did put Stude' covers on a 350 Chev engine. Alignment was a bit fussy (the GM covers being slighty large) but they do fit and seal against oil leaks.
Was wondering if anyone has done the reverse - Place Chev (W/out the name) aluminum covers on a Stude' 289?

The factory 283 Chevy engines had Studebaker decals on their stamped steel valve covers.

Given the low production volume and the decline of Studebaker it is doubtful that any were made in aluminum with Studebaker script. That said, it might be possible to get "blank" Chevy aluminum covers and have Studebaker CNC-ed on them. Or possibly have an aluminum plate CNC-ed and attach it to the valve covers.

Talk to the folks at Ansen...http://www.ansenusa.com/. They made me a set of aluminum small block Chevy valve covers for my '70 Avanti with the Avanti script laser engraved into it. I'm sure you can have the same thing done with the Studebaker script. I emailed them the script and they entered it into their laser and it did a great job. They can leave it natural or fill it with any color you like.

I built a set of adapters to put the Stude valve covers on a SBC back in 2002...

Also built custom breathers and plumbed a closed PCV system in there...
              Wasn't too hard.

Nice work, Jeff! It's amazing what a man, a Bridgeport, and a lot of time can produce.

Working two or three jobs at a time is hard enough....One requiring travel 3/4 days a week..
Toss in a move to another state, and a new property to rehab, along with a new shop to set up.
Toss in all the prep for a new 2014 Studebaker event... There is no free time.

                  It's all good, though...

When GM came out with the center bolt valve covers we did the proto type work on making adapters to use older style valve covers. Sold thousands of them to GM before the Chinese started importing them for less money then I could buy the raw material for. Was told the pres of GM had a set on his corvette. Interestingly my contact at GM was a gentleman named Walter Lark!

A Studebaker valve cover will fit over a steel small block Chevy valve cover. I have a project going on now and will fit such on my Avanti. I will fabricate a PCV fitting on one valve cover and a breather/ oil fill on the other valve cover for a R1 air cleaner. If you need more photos contact me.Click image for larger version

Has anyone tried to put Chevy valve covers on a Stude?

They won't fit without a tag
Seriously, though... I have seen a pair of Gen5 4 bolt valve covers (tall race fabricated aluminum) on a Stude engine.
                          Looked generic.
