  • Body / Glass: Source for the acme thread bolts?

Anyone know of a source for the acme type bolts used in a lot of car bodies in the 50's?
SI has some but not the longer sizes.

Give us the part numbers you are looking for.
I have over 600 different standard parts inventoried.
I stock many small PITA parts (pain in the ass) such as special clips ,springs etc.
I do not stock doohickies ,I need part numbers.

Try McMaster Carr. This industrial supply company has almost everything. Not quite as complete but also a very good source is Granger and Co. Another industrial supply co.

If you have a local Fastenal store (www.fastenal.com for locations) you might take a sample in there. A lot items are only sold in box quantities, but if you get a friendly counterperson they will sometimes bend the rules.

McMaster was the first place I looked as I order from them every week. They don't have them.

Restoration Specialties --- already tried them, they don't carry them. Good company to deal with.

http://www.auveco.com used to carry them but now don't. They are a good company to deal with.

http://www.dependableacme.com/custlett.htm - Jeff, they handle the big stuff, we would need 1/4", 5/16, 3/8

Bob, I'll try and find my list that I sent SI. Some have been filled but I want extra to have on hand for future work. I want some in the longer lengths (1")

Acme threads are wider than standard and less per inch. Many makes used these for fastening body parts together in the 50's.

More than you ever wanted to know:

The Acme thread was developed sometime in the second half of the nineteenth century as a profile well suited to power screws that has various advantages over the square thread, which had been the form of choice until then. It is easier to cut via either single-point threading or die than the square thread is (because the latter's shape requires tool bit or die tooth geometry that is poorly suited to cutting); it wears better than square (because the wear can be compensated for); it is stronger than a comparably sized square thread; and it makes for smoother engagement of the half nuts on a lathe leadscrew than square does. So, ACME threads are what are used on the bolts that secure the rear fenders to the side of the trunk on my 51 Land Cruiser. The threads are widely spaced, flat-topped and go into a square nut secured to the body inside the trunk.

I have a friend who bought a locksmithing business called ACME Lock & Safe. I alway picture a heavy safe with an ACME label landing on our coyote friend from Warner Brothers.
