  • Frame / Springs: Front Spring Question

Moving a 289 and 200-4R OD automatic into my Champion Conestoga wagon. I have front springs from the 64 Cruiser donor car and also the original springs from the wagon. I want to lower the car a bit in the front. If I use the original 6 cylinder springs how much will it lower the car and will they still have enough compression left for the car to drive reasonably when accompanied by a quality set of shocks to control movement?

Alternative is to have the V8 springs reworked or remove 1/2 to 1 coil.

Your suggestions and experience are appreciated

    Good question Pat.
As you know, I'm doing the same thing, only my engine is a 259.

I've been told that the I-6 springs aren't even close to enough. While they may not bottom sitting still, it won't take much to make them bottom..! We'll see what happens..

I've also got a set of heavy springs that have the same o.d as the Stude spring....they are 70 Monte Carlo front springs.
The shocks I put on my wagon should control either spring (from 41 Frank).

      Pat,
I've got that Lark convertible which used to have a 6 in it. I just finished plopping down a V8 4 speed into in. I'll post a pic of the front rake tomorrow for you. I drove my Coupe for a couple years with 6 springs and a V8. After a while, they did start to bottom out. I prefer the V8 springs with a coil or two cut out of them. Not the 3 coils I have cut out of them now, though. I wouldn't recommend that for you. BTW, I've already got a set of V8 springs for the Convertible. They'll go in next week or so. If you're still pondering by then, I can do a before and after shoot.

Thanks guys that helps. I also plan to talk with my local spring expert and Hanley's Blacksmith shop and see what he says. Of course the no cost. low cost alternatives are preferred.

after all these years, the V8 coils will have collapsed after simply sitting. In a Lark, depending on tires, the old V8 springs will commit to rubbing in certain, daily driving. I'd try the worn V8 coils as a 1st choice...
