  • Engine: Chevrolet to Studebaker V8 swap.

    Wondering. Has anyone ever replaced a 1965-66 Chevrolet 283 V8 engined Studebaker with a 1962-64 Studebaker 289 V8?

    My best friend did.

Must not be too tough as he didn't whine too much.

He bought a complete parts car and switched over the engine, tranny, shifter, etc.

WHY would anyone want to do that? There's absolutely nothing wrong with a 283 Chevy engine, it's a great engine. Anyone going to all the trouble to change an engine from a Chevy to a Stude must be loony.

I agree unless its just what you have and the 283 is no good.

I just hope your buddy offered up the 283 specific parts (motor mount pedestals, tranny crossmember, accelerator pedal linkage, etc.) up for sale; he can pick up a few $$$ for that stuff since it will fit a SBC into a 1962-64 Lark (been there, done that).

I did this once. It was pretty straight forward, but I had a parts car to get all of the bits and pieces. I sold all of the Chevy specific stuff to help finance it.
