  • Engine: Valve Stem Seal Preference

Seems there are three (at least) forms of stem seals:
    Umbrella: as w/ std Stude
Hat Type: high temp push-on seals
Positive Seals: Lock onto valve guide
The PVC umbrellas have already been ruled out - They should be replaced every 3,000-5,000 mi.
Have been told that the positive seals limit the lube to the valve stems which could result in accelerated guide/valve stem wear.
Any opinions as to which to use?
(289 engine w/ bronze guides and stainless valves for around town and "spirited" hiway driving)
As usual, thanks for all the help, Paul TK

For stock valve guides...just stick with the tried and true...umbrella style. Most of the other seals require a smaller guide diameter OR a larger spring.
You can get high temp. umbrella types also. Just better rubber and sometimes a protective coating around the hole for the stem.

Thanks - That may be the safe way to go (have a couple requests posted w/ the mfr's - No reply as yet). The bronze guides are sized for positive seals.

I use the umbrella type seals and as long as the guides and valve stems are in good shape, they do a good job controlling oil running down the guides. Bud
