  • Body / Glass: GT Hawk Hood Prop - Did I loose something?

Is there something to secure the hood prop into the mounting hole at the radiator? It will be fine when the hood is up or the prop is in the stored position. However, it can be easily removed in transition. This is one photo I didn't take when taking the car apart! Never enough photos.

Yes, Perry; the clip is Part Number 299777.

You might be able to find a generic one at a good automotive parts hardware store; it is not necessarily unique to Studebakers. BP

You are missing a clip as the previous poster stated, but please do not use your prop rod until you get the clip. With or without the grille the hood hurts when it falls.

I really appreciate this information. Thanks Bob and Bill.

I looked up the part in the SI catalog. With that information I looked through my zip bags and found the clip. This is difficult to say, but I can't figure out how it is installed. The parts book shows the clip, but not in detail. Any photo, or a verbal description would appreciated. As Bill says, a falling hood hurts, but the damage to the hood / grille would be worse!

I have photos of a dozen GT Hawks taken at meets, but none show this detail.

        Thanks,
        Perry

There should be a small hook that would protrude through the hole, with the main clamping facing outwards towards the front. Put the small hook thru the hole, insert the prop rod, and clip the clamp around the rod. The rod keeps the smaller hook from working out of the hole.

It's similar to some of the small clips on the carb linkage.

Thanks, it worked. It's obvious once you see it!

I've had my Hawk for 17 years, and never knew about this clip.

Here is how the clip looks installed. Combine the photo with the description given by bezhawk and the hood prop is secure.

Thanks Bob, I ordered my clip from SI. I thought it was missing a palnut but could not fiqure how I would ever get it on the rod.

I purchased this clip and it immediately broke when I went to clip it on the rod. Anyone else have this problem? Bummer! Is it possible my support rod is to big around? Anyone know what the size of the stock rod should be?

                          Thanks

The hood prop rod on our '63 GT is 3/8 ".

Consider it to be a bad clip and try again. I've had that clip in my small bolt stash for years, never able to figure out how it worked. I installed my clip the day this thread was posted with the picture. I have to say the clip was really tight and I too was afraid it would break off but managed to get it installed around the rod. Sure is a simple little clip and works like a charm... Again thanks for posting this.
