  • Engine: stuck valves in the 40

Oh Boy, after this 1940 flathead engine had sat for over 25 years I brought it home soaked the cylinders with oil until I could get to it, which was another year. She runs now just very rough. The compression test revealed one Cyl. @ 95, the rest @ 0 or @60. I squirted oil in the two 0 cylinders with no change. I'm assuming stuck valves how do I un stick 'em. Do I just pull the head? Will pulling the side covers reveal anything other than nothing happening? thanks

I'd pull the head. You could see if they are stuck if you pull the side covers, but then you would end up pulling the head anyway.

If you pull the head, don't leave it off for another X number of years. That will allow the cylinders to rust up. Many a decent/salvageable flat head engine has gone to its final rest after someone pulled the head to inspect it, then let the engine sit with its innards exposed to the elements.

Welp I'm just gonna pull this engine and put in the spare I checked and has good 100 plus compression on all cylinders. Everything is interchangable so we might be on the road before the end of summer. I'll pull the head on the bad motor to investigate the damage. This car was stored inside so I doubt weather was the culprit. As always thanks for the input. Sometimes I just shoot from the hip and get excited without thinking things thru and my options. Thanks again.
